Terrific article by Bob Ryan (one of the best) in the Globe this morning about the sorry state of college football, i.e., money, NIL and transfer portal.

Jack Swarbrick lamented ND couldn't sell the ACC on adding Stanford & Cal; however, it does beg the question why the ACC can't add Notre Dame for football!

Maybe because ND football has consistently refused joining any conference. The Big 10(12,14 ?) would be logical, but this is FBS. No logic, just greed, which is also ND’s motivation,

Notre Dame doesn't want to play football in the ACC. That move would cost them too much money. I'm no geography whiz, but I'm almost positive, California is not on the Atlantic Coast (as in the Atlantic Coast Conference). One might even argue that California is more like on the Pacific Coast. Stanford and Cal in the ACC would be a total misnomer. Next thing you know the Big 10 conference won't have 10 members

They could rename the ACC the Coastal Athletic Conference - wait, that name is already taken.

I take that back - there is a Coastal Athletic Association, but not a Coastal Athletic Conference. I say make the change, really confuse things even more than they already are.

And the most nutty league configuration award goes to...
Pine Manor was a member. The footnote says they were acquired by BC. Nearby fellow former all women’s junior college Mt. Ida was acquired by UMass Amherst. Illustrating that thriving long term or even survival as an academic institution isn't guaranteed. So if a college has a conference that is a decent fit, don't throw it away.

Christopher Newport is consistently one of the top teams in the country for MBB and WBB the last few years and they play in that.

No logic, just greed, which is also ND’s motivation, And if the ACC as we know it collapses at some point in near future, will be interesting to see what happens with ND's "all other sports". They could go back to the Big East while remaining fully indy in football or they could put together a similar arrangement with the Big Ten like they currently have with the ACC - 4 or 5 games a year in football + membership in all other sports. ND already in BiG in M/W hockey.

Bizarre league (C to C) with two excellent teams and 3 terrible ones. Pratt, who my neighbor on the Cape is going to play for, is pretty bad and Finlandia, which I thought was the name of a vodka (and is, I just looked it up), is worse.
They don't even necessarily play each other during the regular season.

No logic, just greed, which is also ND’s motivation, Oddly, ND is a Big Ten hockey school now ND has always seemed to align itself sports-wise with the east coast, with exception of football scheduling. They left the CCHA I think it was for Hockey East about 10 years ago and then recently made the geographically sensible move to the Big Ten once they started sponsoring M Hockey.
