Could the WSJ be comparing apples to oranges? To wit: Wouldn't it make sense to disaggregate & compare the various undergraduate colleges w/in the university to other undergrad schools of the same type in other universities? For instance compare the outcomes of schools of liberal arts with other university undergraduate liberal arts schools or stand alone colleges of liberal arts . Same w/ engineering, business, schools of ed, schools, schools of nursing, etc. Lumping all the different undergraduate schools as one would give a distorted view of the particular undergraduate school w/in the university one chooses to attend. A big U might have a great engineering school but the statistics for the undergraduate school of ED. might be quite a bit different. It would be more accurate to compare outcomes of liberal arts schools with each other.

Good points MM67. It is worth noting that HC comes in ahead of a couple of NESCAC schools (Wesleyan, Hamilton and Bowdoin) as well as Wellesley. So alma mater compares favorably with other LACs. Of note, Lehigh comes in at # 14 and Colgate comes in at # 40. BC is at # 45. Still, one has to wonder about this piece given that Iona comes in ahead of Carnegie-Mellon and Brown.

Doesn't Lehigh have a strong undergraduate engineering degree program?

Doesn't Lehigh have a strong undergraduate engineering degree program? Yes. Undergraduate program is ranked in the top 10 percent.

Reading posts on LinkedIn, including from John Luth, HC is ranked #14 in what would I guess would be categorized as the USNWR National Liberal Arts category, and #84 overall. I don't subscribe to the WSJ, so I can't see the detailed tables, or the methodology.

While Fr. McF and. to perhaps a slightly lesser degree, Fr. B fairly sniffed at college rankings, I suspect that Vince has a more "worldly view" of them and will try to take actions to get Holy Cross more highly ranked consistent with principles and ethics.
I'm neither impressed nor think HC being 60th of 400 ranked schools is acceptable or accurate.

I looked at the rankings - don't know their methodology but there are many schools ranked higher and lower than you would think and I have my doubts about the accuracy of this WSJ survey

Well, WSJ. It's not like its an important one like the USN&WR one. That's the one that really counts!
