The world needs more Tim Wakefield's, not fewer. RIP Wake.

He won 200 games with his knuckles as a starter, long reliever and even closer if memory serves. You held your breath when he came into the game. He even had a personal catcher, Mirabelli for awhile. He was also always calm and low key in interviews which undoubtedly helped him smooth out the unpredictability of life as a knuckleballer.
Apparently he wanted to keep his illness private but it was released by Curt Schilling on his podcast. The Red Sox immediately responded that Curt was not authorized by the Wakefield Family to share medical information.
Schilling was kicked out of Rhode Island and ESPN and apparently estranged from the Red Sox. Remind me not to listen to his podcast which I never heard of anyway.

Releasing that info was wrong. I will simply continue not listening to Curt.

Not sure when the diagnosis came, but this is really fast after Schilling outed him. Wake was working games for NESN in September
Silly stat: When Wake retired, he was (by a wide margin) the active leader in no hitters broken up in the 9th inning

Wake was working games for NESN in September Silly stat: When Wake retired, he was (by a wide margin) the active leader in no hitters broken up in the 9th inning I read that he was only diagnosed a few weeks ago. He started having some vision problems and that prompted tests which revealed the cancer. Here is the announcement and reaction by the radio guys during the pregame. From this and other stuff I read, he seemed well liked by all around the club. x.com/SoxBooth/status/1708570563231252520?s=20

Unfortunately, playing for the Pirates in the early 90s also puts him in the same category as other mlb brain cancer victims. Three Rivers Stadium had the same kind of playing surface.

Another reason to support grass playing surfaces across sports.
