Sam Herder released his votes for the top national FCS Awards: Walter Payton Award Finalists List 5. Mercer WR Ty James 4. South Dakota State QB Mark Gronowski 3. Monmouth RB Jaden Shirden 2. North Carolina Central QB Davius Richard 1. Holy Cross QB Matthew Sluka Sluka is an absolute dog. A feared offensive player who sometimes willed his team to victories, he can get it done with his arm and his legs. Graded as the No. 1 or 2 FCS QB on PFF for most of the season, Sluka went 122/197 passing (62%) for 1,728 yards, 20 touchdowns, and five interceptions while rushing 186 times for 1,247 yards (6.7 YPC) and nine scores. Sluka did this while missing most of two games late in the season while battling an injury. Dobbs is a finalist for the Buck Buchanan Award but Herder does not rank him in the top 5. herosports.com/fcs-football-2023-walter-payton-buck-buchanan-votes-bzbz/

Sluka the most valuable player in FCS, hands down.
I wonder if the 2 games missed will cost him the award.

I wonder if some of the games missed for Dobbs hurt his chances. To me, it was Dobbs, Kelly the Albany LB, and Terrell Allen (Tenn St) that were atop the tackle leaderboards most weeks and perhaps deserving of the award.

Craig Haley also released his ballot and voted for Sluka as number one. I think Matt is a lock to be in the final three and invited to Frisco and has a decent shot at winning it.

Jamie Williams from FCS Fans Nation didn't have Sluka on his ballot at all.

Sluka the most valuable player in FCS, hands down. I wonder if the 2 games missed will cost him the award. It could hurt him, not because he sat out, but because he actually didn't sit out. So uninformed voters who just look at the stats are looking at them accumulated in 11 games (because he did appear in 2 games when he was "out") instead of the 9 that he truly played in.

Dobbs is one of two FCS players among the fifteen semi-finalists for the Comeback Player of the Year award.

The two games he sat (mostly) hurt his chances for sure.

Two comments on the WP Award: Since it isn't strictly a QB award, Sluka's total yards--rushing and passing definitely should be considered and hopefully was considered as well as rushing TD's and passing TD's. I believe his combined yardage still puts him behind Brosmer's passing yards, but the award is not just about stats (ie. in hockey the Rocket Richard is given to the leading goal scorer, which is separate from the Hart MVP trophy). A complete look at the candidates as well as the schedule played, would give Matt a slight advantage, I would think.
While I am sure healthy and strategy and other factors went into the decision to dress Matt for those 2 games, it would be interesting if he did not dress and his stats were only through 9 games (if that would even make a difference in the eyes of the voters).

Sluka 8 first place votes and 5 5th place votes out of 21 votes, for 4th place overall No totals given for the top 3 Wait, Brosmer was No. 1 in the FCS in passing yards per game (314.9) and total offensive yards per game (326.4). That means that he ran for an average of 11.5 yards/game?? Wow, what a double-threat beast he was!! Using the nine games that Sluka truly played, he threw for an average of 192, and ran for an average of 139. Combined, that's more yards per game than Brosmer, and, for my money, much more impressive. I'll take Matt.

I would too but the argument would be that he played against lesser competition (i.e. PL and IL mostly) but the counter-argument is two FBS games. FCS is definitely skewed to the Dakotas and Montana.
