The owner of Washington's NBA and NHL franchises is poised to move the teams to a new arena across the Potomac River, to Alexandria VA.
The owner of the Caps and the Wizards owns the Capital One arena, but the city owns the land beneath. The owner can buy out the remaining ground lease for $37 million.
Seems unlikely that the Hoyas can afford the future costs of playing in the Capital One Arena, if they are the only major tenant. Might this lead to Georgetown leaving the Big East?

Very doubtful They just spent mucho dollars to take Cooley from PC. I do not have an answer to where they might play, but I cannot see them leaving the Big East. We have at least one Hoya poster to comment here

Can you imagine Georgetown in the PL for hoops? Wow! Fun to think about but never gonna happen. It's more likely that HC joins the BE....

Either they'll stay in CapOne if CapOne continues to exist (I don't follow the logic around why this would make it more expensive for GTown, it seems like this would make GTown more desirable as an incumbent/ongoing tenant at CapOne), or they'd just move to Alexandria with the Caps/Wiz. They're not leaving the Big East over this.

Indeed fun to contemplate. (And less stressful than wondering when HC will have its new head football coach!)

They're not leaving the Big East over this. The District offered to spend $500 million to renovate CapOne, but Leonis is pursuing a bigger pay-out / pay-day: a $2 billion development in Alexandria, centered around the new arena. His new arena will have a Metro subway station, and probably oodles of parking. Georgetown on the Capital One Arena guhoyas.com/sports/2018/6/6/facilities-gu-verizon-center-html.aspxBack in the day, the Hoyas played at the Capital Centre in Landover MD, for about 16 years. GU was the last tenant. www.hoyabasketball.com/history/arenas.htmI don't see the District spending $500 million to renovate an arena whose only tenant is Georgetown. IMO, a possibility is that CapOne might also be demolished, and the site converted into housing. .

I agree, of course. I just think it more likely than you that the District keep the arena, without the renovations, for GTown/concerts/other uses. It was built in 1997, it's not exactly falling down.
If they do demolish it, seems obvious GTown would just go to Alexandria.

Depends on where Georgetown thinks its customers come from.
Proposed arena is next to a subway station and is 6.2 miles away from the Georgetown campus.
Current arena is 3.2 miles away.
3 miles more for the students but maybe most of their higher-paying customers live closer to Alexandria.

CAA has been playing its tournament here recently. And the WNBA team plays there too. Might be perfect size for Georgetown's smaller games with the team playing most of the Big East opponents and bigger draws in Alexandria in the new arena.

Wouldn't GU be safe for awhile playing at this modern looking 6,000 seater? If they have to attract 2-3,000 more fans per game to break even in Alexandria, filling the house or close to it at this mid-sized barn might be a better match until the Hoyas return to glory.

You got me thinking about how Red Auerbach was a regular in the stands at GW games and people could just sit and talk basketball with him. GW has the 5,000 seat Charles E. Smith Center which is perfect for A-10 games. They are all set.

Great location right in the middle of Foggy Bottom...Barack could have walked to a game from the White House (don't believe his successors on either side of the aisle are hoop fans).

Link below is a history of GU's proposed but never built conversion of McDonough "Arena" into a larger, on-campus venue for hoops. www.hoyabasketball.com/features/renovation.htmLink above is a fascinating tale of the rise and fall of on-campus athletic facilities at Georgetown. Two models are cited in the article as worthy of emulation: a reconstructed arena at Lipscomb, and Villanova. The article was written in 2020, which was after the land adjacent to McDonough (which was the site of tennis courts) was taken to build Thompson practice facility for hoops, with two courts stacked one above the other. Top court for the men because Thompson le fils didn't want people peering in, and the bottom for the women. This reflects all-too-well how land-squeezed the GU's Georgetown campus is. The expand-McDonough concept might still be feasible. A big problem would be access for fans who are not Georgetown students.

If they do demolish it, seems obvious GTown would just go to Alexandria. Capital One is not being demolished. Leonsis wants to hold onto to that as, essentially, his "B" arena in town. G'town will remain there, and the WNBA's Mystics, who've played at the Entertainment and Sports Arena in Southeast D.C. for the last five years, will likely move back downtown to Capital One once the Wizards and Capitals have left, which will (the idea, anyway) free up dozens of dates for other events at COA as well. The idea is similar to that of Steve Ballmer, who owns the L.A. Clippers, who've played in downtown L.A. at Staples Center along with the Lakers for the last couple of decades, but who are now about to move into their own facility in Inglewood next year. But Ballmer also has bought and now owns the nearby Forum in Inglewood, which is where the "Showtime" Lakers of the Magic Johnson era played before Staples was built. So the "big" events will be in Ballmer's new building, while medium/smaller concerts/leagues will go to the Forum. Either way, Ballmer gets paid. Leonsis has the same idea in D.C.
