wapo.st/3GQhcmxHave only quickly skimmed a long article. The link is not behind a paywall. Briefly, the article is heavy on data, and displays the change in participation state-by-state, and attempts to draw correlations between participation and race, economic status, and even blue state / red state. Based on a quick skim, it does not attempt to correlate changes in participation with declines in fertility rates; i.e., fewer babies being born in the U.S. eventually means fewer teen-agers. (Population growth in some states is not now reliant on immigration, and children born outside of the U.S., Immigrants have little.no prior association with American football. IMO, the quoted section suggests that NILs could be a powerful inducement, if teens playing football are relying on an economic risk-reward calculus.

In Bergen County, NJ it was outside gymnastic programs that destroyed high school girls' teams. It was a founding sport of The Bergen County Women Coaches Association so gymnastics remains a BCWCA sport despite having only a few schools that still field the sport. On the other hand, teams for girls' ice hockey, lacrosse, bowling, cross country and several other sports have brought the number women athletes to record highs. The next sports to be officially recognized will probably be girls' wrestling and flag football. Only a few yearsnago it appeared gthat girls' high school sports might be threatened, but that has been freversed and they are again growing.
