There will be a lot in this so bear with me. It's educated guesses, with some know facts.
The team is losing 37 players from the roster: 1 Long snapper, 1 Punter, 18 on Offense, and 17 on Defense. This includes people in the portal (Shorter, Smith - now at Purdue, et al) . It also includes 33 Super Seniors/Seniors. 4 Seniors are returning from what I know - Daddona, Kelly, MacAuley, Kane.
There were 108 players on the roster last year. Leaves 75. Today HC added 10 players. So now 85 on the roster. My expectation is a 100 player roster. Before COVID the roster was at 90. First year of COVID - 96. Second - unlimited. I'm just going to assume it will roll back to 100 with only 1 year left of COVID classes. Just a round number that I believe is reasonable after discussion with midwest.
Based on what they are losing and what they've gained today I think they will sign another 15 players to get to the 100 - one caveat is if the 2 OL (Miles and the unnamed OL actually sign in the next two days - the signing period remains open til Friday), then I believe they would sign 13.
I believe they will have approximately 9/10 schollies for 15 spots or 7/8 schollies for 13 spots if the 2 OL sign. Again educated guesses, but I think very much in the ballpark.
I believe their needs will be as follows for the second signing period - these could come via portal or High School signings. In other words a LOT of work to do in 7 weeks, which is really 5 weeks because of XMAS and New Years:
1 QB 1 WR 1 TE 1 or 3 OL 1 LB 2 Safeties 2 CB 1 P/K 3 DEs
For those of you who's interest is recruiting please hold me to the above to see how I ended up doing by February 7th - the player part, not the scholly part because ultimately we won't have any idea how the money breaks down, player by player.

I think you nailed it Harry. 100 being the max number. 95-100 IMO.

This is a big period for Coach Curran and we all hope he nails it. There are a lot of bigtime needs in this period. Midwest and I have talked - Field CB (vs. Boundary), 2 DE, QB and OL (again depending) are the most significant needs of all.
WR would be the 4th in this class; LB would be the #2 in this class, TE would be the #2 in this class; you get the picture.
If they get these 2 then OL becomes a low priority.

This is great info. Question though: wondering why we need a QB when I think there are still four on the roster.

You always need 5. Rauner hurt his leg/knee and will be a 2025 player. Hopefully with HC.

Thanks for the detailed breakdown. The OL in the next two days will be interesting to watch. You nailed the projection so far hopefully HCDC nails the next month!

So I'm going to update this now that the signing window is done. The signee roster does indicate Ashton Booker, which leads me to believe he actually signed his NLI. So I expect 2 OL instead of 1 or 3. Overall I expect 14 spots to be filled to make a roster of 100 total (that could be off a few players, but this is the baseline I'll use). My guess is about 8-9 schollies for 14 spots. QB, DE, CB, OL, the greatest needs.

Did he commit or sign a LOI?

Posted his commitment on Twitter. Post is dated today. No indication as to whether he has signed an LOI. Since (as I understand it) the early signing period is now closed, if he did not sign an LOI by yesterday, it would have to wait until the next signing period in February.

We also have no idea if he’s a PWO. He has zero offers. PWOs don’t have to sign an NLI.

If he's a DE we must still be chasing Watson type guy(s).
If there's any money for a another LB our old friend Bowen Drewes is uncommitted last I looked.

Watched this kid on tape. He has a little edge to him which I love. Catholic Conference kid which I love. I know Coach Curran wants to tap into Catholic Conferences all over the country especially the one in Massachusetts. Something that we’ve not done well in the past.

Needs to tap into Detroit Catholic League Central Division. In 2020-22, three of our top 22 (Dobbs, Newman & Reynolds) were Central Division alums-two FCS first string All-Americans this year and a starter as a grad student on an FBS bowl game winner. Pretty good yield, I’d say.

Hopefully we can get him on campus in January. Good looking edge player.

I was listening to NEFJ and they mentioned that Curran was one of the most (if not the most) tapped in coach with re: to MA high schools. While I don't want us to focus on just MA kids, it would be nice to build a solid pipeline, especially with kids from the MA Catholic schools.

And the Cincinnati Catholic League....back in our era, that was a gold mine for us.....gotta get back there.....not every player is going to TOSU

It’s now a Top 10 state for HS ball and we have been letting kids get away in our own backyard. Plus we have HC connected alums at places like Catholic Memorial and have not leveraged those relationships. Hopefully we don’t see a drop off in places we’ve had lots of success like NJ TX FL but rule 1 in recruiting is to own your backyard regardless the location.

Offer from Toledo. Coach says “He’s a tremendous athlete and competitor with a high motor. He has an unbelievable bend and quickness on the pass rush. Stone has NFL talent with the right development and continuous work ethic.”

Very true with respect to Massachusetts recruiting. Prior to signing Ashton Booker, my chart on recruits shows 8 offers to Massachusetts recruits, with 7 committing elsewhere and 1 (DB Luke Lengel) remaining uncommitted. Of course, looking at the schools that the 7 committed to, it is rather stiff competition -- UConn, Army, Michigan State, Boston College, Ball State (Ty Curran), Harvard, and Dartmouth.

Recruiting rankings, especially at the FCS level, are always kind of a crapshoot, but nice recognition for the class so far.

Chesney put HC on the map of top FCS/low level FBS recruits. It's Curran's job to keep the talent train moving. So far, so good.
