Especially for a young team, those time outs are a teaching tool

At least there was some cheering in the gym last night, assume some spring sport student athletes are back - does anyone know which teams have started preseason workouts ? don't know when the ncaa 'start dates' are for M&W lax, baseball, softball etc..

On a more positive note, Caleb Kenney is playing like Superman (foul shooting is his kryptonite). Oftentimes it looks like Caleb is playing 1 on 5. Maybe 1.5 on 5.
That said, there was a stretch where we had 4 first years (a/k/a freshmen) on the floor. Whether we are up by a couple; down by a couple; or up by 12 like last night, I await and dread the usual shooting drought while the opponent goes on a big run from which we don't recover. Our passing remains atrocious leading to an unacceptable level of turnovers. Experience needed? Foul shooting? Ugh.

McDonald (#22) was unconscious last night, he hit multiple 3's with defenders on him, quick release...HC was able to score the ball, inside and out..The D is right now a step late. Navy did a great job cutting and moving to get open. I would characterize this loss as a step backwards, some good some bad from it.. The turnovers felt like trying to do to much rather than take what was there. Some unforced TO's, game speed is faster than practice speed. I thought AJ played pretty solid, on both ends of the floor, as did Batch. Williams seems to be pressing a bit, not playing with the confidence he did early in the season. I'm still waiting for Nugent to break out and attack the rim..Caleb needs to use 2 hands doing everything. I thought the big play in the game was the charge called on Joe on the break with about 8 minutes left. It looked tome like the Navy player (#1) stepped to his right as Joe went to go by him..It seemed like that was the momentum moment of the game. Still the team is looking a bit better, a ways to go, obviously. but slowly getting there, 70 points is a start. The D has to see and anticipate a step quicker. And my last thought, everybody on the team has to learn to catch, and pick up the ball with 2 hands, violently! Too soft right now, getting the ball knocked out of their hands too often....

We now rank dead last of 362 teams in KenPom’s defensive rankings. More colorful wall treatments for this cozy basement apartment.
Extra Scoring Chances/G - 354th. For the season, HC has allowed opponents an average of six extra scoring chances per. Last three games, they've allowed nine extra. Last night, Navy got fourteen. Simply impossible to win, when you don't get TOs (Turnover Margin - 344th), can't stop shooters (OppEFG%, 315th; Opp3FG%, 352nd), and fail to rebound adequately (DR%, 283rd). In all of these respects, we are worse than last year.
Also, all members of the team need to be equipped with GPS, so that they can find the free throw line (FT/G - 359th), even if they can't make them (FT% - 344th).

Our defense makes reasonably poor teams look like offensive machines.
I know we're young but this aspect of our game should not be this bad.

Only one team in D1 hoops scores fewer than HC's 8.1 ppg from the foul line; Army at 7.9.

HC has no inside game so we shoot fewer free throws, and then only make 62% of them (versus our opponents 76%).

I don’t care how bad our defense is, I just can’t believe that #22 never had more than 17 points in a game before. He was very talented!

Not a ton between them but not nothing either

Not a ton between them but not nothing either Octave's been to the line 64 times, no two teammates combined have been there that much. Kenney 28, Ryan 25 (for the number of minutes he's played, that's a positive; his 72% percentage is not bad and would be better had he not gone brick city a game or two ago), Louth 24. Bo, despite missing a lot of games, is 5th at 22. Excluding Ryan, the only other one with a ft percentage remotely acceptable is Octave (67.2); the best of the other 3 is Bo's 50%. Insanely poor. Of the others that play, we have AJ with 15 trips to the line; Batchelder with 9; DeAndre with 6. Nugent has 3, which is almost impossible for the position he plays; Singleton 2. In other words, Nugent and Singleton have as many attempts as Rabinovich and Kirkwood, respectively.

The guys listed who take basically all of their shots from within 5' are 2nd thru 4th in FTA. Yes. Octave has more FTA than then next two guys on the list. He also has more FGA than any two of the 3 inside guys combined
Nugent does not go to the line much for a forward. He also averages one 2 point FGA per game. Although I've seen a couple of attempts to run something for him right under the hoop on an inbounds play in the last two games
