Just wondering. We know our friend Avery LaBarbara had some kind of NIL deal either just before she left HC or when she went to Wisconsin as a grad student transfer (or both).
She subsequently transferred to BC as a grad coaching assistant. Can she or someone else in the same situation get an NIL? Or would it just be a payment for an endorsement since she/they aren't actual players?

NIL is for student athletes. Grad Assistant Coaches can rep any company they want as an influencer, endorser, etc. It just wouldn't need to go through a collective I would think. I wonder how grad assistants have traditionally made money to pay their expenses, as well as what they do for the basketball team? I'm the one who thinks four coaches and a DOBO for 12-13 student athletes is feather bedding as it is before adding one (or more?) graduate assistant.

Avery was on a laptop the day I was at BC this year during the game. I assume she was charting something on the computer

That is a great way of apprenticing for a coaching career. I think staffing is over the top these days but I still support all the people who are occupying the various positions. In Avery's case she may have chosen this route over some level of international professional basketball. I wish her every good luck in her career.

NIL laws apply to student athletes while they are playing/competing. Grad assistant coaches don't count against NCAA coach limits. I think she was 'hired' by the BC coach; i.e sponsored by the coach, she applied to & enrolled in a grad school program. This is similar to a chemistry grad student assisting in chem lab sessions for undergrads.

Thanks. My impression, no inside knowledge, was Avery was going to do the extra grad year at BC after Wisconsin grad year playing to get her coaching feet wet. Figured a one year deal at BC and then look to actually get paid to coach as an assistant somewhere . . . . like Holy Cross, perhaps. I do know she had an NIL previously but no details.
