Cara is like a gnat that you can't shake on defense.

Magarity pushed all the right buttons in the fourth quarter. Key was subbing Allen, Berger, and Foreman in - putting McCormack at the point - with 5 1/2 left and HC up three. Pulled away from there, with Cara scoring seven of her nine, and Allen/Berger cleaning up low- thought Janelle and Lindsay played really well together

If Janelle stays healthy and HC has a good run in the PLT plus a national post season game, she has a shot at 1000 points despite her Covid shortened freshman campaign.

That first half game was a tough one. I saw at least 4 uncalled straight arms against HC defenders by driving AU bigs - especially the one who plays at times like a middle linebacker (Johns?). I can't remember seeing so many defenders getting pushed away with no fouls being called. However, HC did not knuckle under and our seniors showed strong leadership helped by some well-timed foul shooting in turning the game around in the second half. Clearly it is good to have BPC there when she is needed as she was tonight and Cara coming off the bench in the 4th Quarter was a key to the win. She is a calming presence that kept the game under control.

And they didn't.

Kind of a crazy game between two tough teams - when you shoot only 33 pct (18 of 54) and miss 9 free throws, you'd think it would be tough to find a way but we did through a 45-37 reb edge and the usual gritty defense - AU's '9 minute scoring drought' certainly helped Congrats to the team on the longest winning streak since 2005 !

The football team was well represented at the game; I think I saw Kelley, Fuller, Pesansky among others. It was good to see the women's team respond when the game got physical. Our players box out well, which I love.

'Comes from our defense': Holy Cross women's basketball stops American for ninth straight victorywww.telegram.com/story/sports/college/2024/01/24/holy-cross-womens-basketball-adjusts-shuts-down-american-for-ninth-straight-win/72336114007/ Jennifer Toland Worcester Telegram & Gazette WORCESTER — The streaking Holy Cross women’s basketball team faced an unusual situation in Wednesday night’s game against Patriot League foe American at the Hart Center. For the first time since their Dec. 10 game at Quinnipiac, the Crusaders trailed at halftime, and fell behind by 10 points early in the third quarter. “We know what we have to do,” HC senior Bronagh Power-Cassidy said, “and that comes from our defense. It’s always just focusing and re-adjusting, going back to our principles and our defense. We can get back in games. We have been there before. We just have to trust each other at both ends of the court, be resilient and chip away.” The Crusaders, who came into the game ranked in the NCAA top 10 in scoring defense, field goal percentage defense, 3-point field goal percentage defense and defensive rebounding, limited American to 15 second-half points on 5-for-29 shooting, won the rebounding battle, and pulled away for a 59-48 victory. HC (13-5, 7-0) has won nine straight for the first time since the 2004-05 season and opened up a two-game lead on American (7-11, 5-2) in the PL standings. That Quinnipiac game was HC’s last loss. “Being down as much as we were, not getting in a flow offensively, being stagnant defensively in the first half and having some foul trouble,” Holy Cross coach Maureen Magarity said, “I’m really proud of how the team adjusted in the second half. Some of the defensive plays we made in the second half were tremendous.” Power-Cassidy scored a game-high 22 points, and, with 10 rebounds, posted her third double-double of the season. Senior forward Janelle Allen, who played just 24 minutes due to first-half foul trouble, had 10 points and six rebounds, and sophomore forward Simone Foreman had a game-high 11 rebounds, eight at the defensive end. Foreman, who made a steal of an Eagles inbounds pass, and dove to save two balls from going out of bounds, was fierce under the American basket. “Simone is having a great year for us statistically,” Magarity said, “but I think a lot of those effort plays, and her athleticism gets us going. Our energy picks up when Simone makes plays like that.” Foreman, who came in averaging 7.3 points and a team-high 9 rebounds, scored just two points, both from the free-throw line against the Eagles. “I felt like I didn’t contribute offensively as much as I wanted,” Foreman said. “Defensively, I had to lock in, and I feel like rebounding is one of my best assets. At halftime, I had a talk within myself about what I had to bring to the team, where I had to step up, and that was rebounding.” American led HC, 33-26, at halftime, and went ahead, 38-28, on junior Bailey Garbee’s 3-pointer in the opening minutes of the second half. The Eagles made just two more baskets in the third quarter, Power-Cassidy scored nine points, and sophomore guard Kaitlyn Flanagan’s driving layup brought the Crusaders within a point, 42-41, heading to the fourth. Against HC’s defense and with the help of the heckling Holy Cross football team behind their hoop, American missed its first eight field goal attempts of the fourth. Senior guard Cara McCormack, who hadn’t scored through three quarters, sparked HC at the offensive end with seven points, and the Crusaders took their own 10-point lead with less than 2 minutes left. “In the first half, American played really, really well,” Magarity said. “They were doing everything we thought they were going to do; they’re a really good team, tough, deep and very physical. Defensively, we didn’t really match their toughness the way they were ducking in on us and their points in the paint, so we had to make that adjustment in the second half.” —Contact Jennifer Toland at jennifer.toland@telegram.com. Underline that "very physical." The fouling was bad when the refs did not call it. AU took advantage of that. It will be interesting to see how our game is aclled at American. I look forward to hearing what our AU visitor thought of the game.

Don’t underestimate how important it was to have the football players heckling AU on offense in the 2nd half - had an influence on their shooting slump - let’s get them out for the men’s game on Saturday

The football team was well represented at the game; I think I saw Kelley, Fuller, Pesansky among others. It was good to see the women's team respond when the game got physical. Our players box out well, which I love. That was one nasty ballgame, especially the fourth quarter. AU seems to be disguising their supposedly non-existent football team as a women's basketball team.
