We've had nice Crossports discussions on Patriot League Academic honors and Holy Cross graduation honors relative to grade inflation. And whether present grade cutoffs for the honors have preserved the distinguished nature of the 'honors'. This came across my news feed as apparently Yale's percentage of A's and A-'s moved to 82% of all grades received during the Covid reaction period and has remained high at about 79% today. (A couple of months ago NYT ran an accurate headline that nearly everyone at Yale get's A's). I don't know if our percentage of A/A- meets or exceeds that but I would be curious to find out. Yale’s report indicates that, in 2020-21, the percentage of Yale College A-range grades — including A’s and A-’s — rose from 72.95 to 81.97 percent, while the mean GPA rose from 3.64 to 3.74. By the 2022-23 school year, these figures stand at 78.97 and 3.70 percent, respectively. A recent story by The Harvard Crimson indicates that 79 percent of grades awarded at Harvard College in 2020-21 fell in the A range.

Wouldn't good students, seemingly the definition for admission into Yale, get mostly As?

Wouldn't good students, seemingly the definition for admission into Yale, get mostly As? That's one argument. By extension that should mean that students at Centerville Community College never get above a C.....

Wouldn't good students, seemingly the definition for admission into Yale, get mostly As? Hmmm. One might imagine the student body at Yale has been consistently bright over the years. Yet this very high rate of A/A- is a recent phenomenon. (I don’t believe this issue is confined to the Ivies in any case.)

I guess I'm thinking something along the lines of: all bugs are insects, but not all insects are bugs. Every student at Yale is a good student, but not every good student goes to Yale.
