The league portion of the schedule is half over
- HC is currently in 7th place. They finished 9th last year. Four way tie for 6th but lost out on every tiebreaker
- 3-6 through 9. Slightly behind last year's 7-11. Combine that with the fact the schedule is slightly lopsided to be harder in the 2nd half (HC has played 4-5 Lehigh twice, but not played 8-1 Colgate at all) means reaching that 7-11 could be challenging but also a sign of growth during conference play
- One measure of what Coach Paulsen thinks of the freshmen is minutes
(overall/conference) Nugent 594/248 Williams 525/241 Singleton 295/88 Wills 292/127 Ryan 147/46
Looking at the conference play as a trend vs the over-all, Wills and Singleton have kind of flip flopped in the pecking order, but Nugent and Williams still appear to maintain the most favor with the coaching staff. Big guys at our level tend to need time to develop. Based on this ransom metric, Coach Paulsen would seem to agree
- Before the season I thought that Montgomery had a decent shot at making the 1000 point club. Losing seven games to a knee injury has turned that into a long shot Kenney or Batch would now seem the most likely candidates to be the next member of that club
- I always expect/hope for a big jump between soph and junior years. Kenney has exceeded by expectations. Offense and defense. The fact that he is always paired up against bigger guys while doing most of his work within three feet of the basket makes his season to date even more impressive

Just from my eye, the defense has improved, as has rebounding. The offense is better, they seem to be able to score with different players. Singleton last Monday sort of came out of nowhere. I had thought Ryan would be regular in the rotation and draw the opposition’s 5 away from the hoop, making penetration easier for the guards. Teams seem to be extending their D to 3 point shooters, Batch isn’t getting many open looks. However our guards seem to begetting to the hoop with more frequently. On D, HC doesn’t extend to all the 3 point shooters on the floor. I’m sure the lack of a big makes this happen. Kenney is blocking shots, but he isn’t a true rim protector, or intimidating. Our guards also go under screens and picks, again giving up 3’s. Free throw shooting has it’s good games and bad. Takes awhile to build confidence, and that is part of what this season is about. All the freshman are seeing the court, and finding success sometime, that is huge! To see 4 or 5 frosh one the floor at the same time is looking to the future while trying to win now.
Overall, this is a much better team now than what we saw before Christmas. Getting better shots, fewer turnovers, better D .. More acting than reacting! We are seeing more and more positive plays and reactions to them, from everybody. Lastly, there is no quit out there!
