Did they win states last year? Yes. Only the 4th time I am aware of that the state D-I champ came out of central MA. Also the first and only public high school D-I champ from central MA

Two of North's best players from last year (not seniors) are now attending prep schools and they're still beating everyone by 15+.

Not sure if it’s true but the city has allowed North to take in all the best basketball talent across the city, even if they fall within the Doherty, South or Burncoat districts. If that is the case, North will be dominant for years to come.

If that is the case, North will be dominant for years to come. The city is not as geographic as it used to be. Certain high schools have core strengths and you get yourself across the city if that's what you're looking for. For example, if you want a focus on music/theater you would go to Burncoat no matter where you live

The city is down to one Diocesan HS which hopefully can offer some specialty programs but not as many as the WPS.

Regarding transfers; last year, one player, Tahlan Pettway, the coaches nephew, received a waiver so he could transfer from Burncoat to North, but I'm not aware of any other transfers on this year's team. Pettway, by the way, was the star last year, but left North to attend a prep school.

Some people are saying that this Worcester North boy's basketball team may be the best ever in MA. Showing that this may not be an overstatement, North demolished Lowell last night in the State quarterfinals, 98-52! Next up is Xaverian Brothers. The Perrys' Catholic Memorial team has also reached the final four.

Someone on Arbiterlive already jumped the gun and put in Worcester North vs Catholic Memorial for the championship! As you mentioned, each school still has to win one more game for that to happen.

Five Worcester area teams are in the State semifinals; Worcester North and South, Wachusett, West Boylston and Millbury. North (boys) and Wachusett (girls) in Div. 1. South (girls) in Div. 2. This has never happened before. Catholic Memorial will face Franklin in the semis. They defeated B.C. High. North Semi is at UMass Boston on Wednesday.

Definitely some good high school ball being played in the Worcester area. North should repeat as champs Wachusett girls are always a wago with the potential to be undefeated state champs Millbury boys have IMO one of the best coaches in the state in Jimmy Donnelly. Best of luck to all.

For years, the state was divided into four regional districts, and the winners of each district made up the semi finals. The state changed to an all state play-off format a few years ago, making this kind of central MA less likely. Under the old system, the best two teams in football and basketball usually came out of the northeast or southeast (sometimes the same district). While the best team was named state champion, the state final rarely matched the two best teams. The new system makes the final a better game, but makes things worse for all the preliminary rounds

My only criticism of the current setup is I'd like to see the neutral courts come into play a round sooner.

Never had to travel too far in any preliminary round and never more than an hour or so for the state semi's. If you're in Pittsfield you could be heading to Dennis-Yarmouth for the round of 16 and then off to Gloucester for the quarterfinals. Especially tough since half the rounds are mid week. The round of 16 and state quarters (formerly district semi's and finals) for hoops was always a great catch at WPI no matter who the schools were - and none of the schools were more than 40 minutes or so away which helped swell crowds

BUMP- Someone forgot to tell Franklin they lost the semis. Sent CM home rather convincingly. Hopefully North will not meet the same fate, IMHO losing to Xaverian would be a huge upset.

Worcester South girls (Div. 2) defeat Northampton and Wachusett girls (Div. 1) defeat Springfield Central to advance to state final (Wachusett will face Bishop Feehan, Lauren's high school, in the final, previously defeating them by 31). West Boylston girls also advance to Div.4 finals. Fantastic year for Central Mass teams. Worcester North and Wachusett will both be heavy favorites to sweep Div. 1 titles.

Going to OT in the North game.
North pulls away in the extra session. Were 1.2 seconds from losing, ran a nice oob play, drew a 2 shot foul and the kid nailed them.
