Massey Ranks HC at #30 and Bentley at #47. HC has 2 wins against them this season (2-0, HC played four games against nearby SHU and AIC but only three against Bentley? How did the business students from Waltham end up in the red?

Another way of asking what LS just asked is: Does anyone know the rhyme or reason to the AHA schedule?
HC plays twice against Air Force, Mercyhurst, Robt. Morris, Canisius, Niagara and RIT (12) HC plays three times against Army and Bentley (6) HC plays Sacred Heart and AIC four times (8)
It appears to me to be two divisions, East and West and you only play the Westerners twice (back-to-back home or away)..is that correct?

I don't know but HC, Bentley and the two service academies would appear to be the most well heeled schools and even they have budget demands so any geographic economizing in scheduling makes good sense.
Maybe HC could have played four against Bentley and two against Army but pushed to play the extra one against West Point, our PL partner and opponent in other sports for more than a century as well as a very prestigious institution.

Need 1 more team in Atlantic Hockey to make a more balanced schedule, east vs west divisions. Maybe Stonehill will join, both LIU and Utica want to join Atlantic Hockey.
There is also potential that the Ivy League will form their own hockey conference. They just did it for wrestling. The dominoes for that would probably have Quinnipiac going to Hockey East and schools like Army, RIT and potentially HC, SHU, Bentley going to the ECAC.
Speculation on that is from Mike McMahon’s reporting

It is very difficult scheduling the Atlantic Hockey teams because of the odd number. It is true that they do need a 12th team. That would balance the schedule and have them play only 22 league games. That would allow 12 out of conference games and hopefully give Atlantic teams a better opportunity to increase teams RPI.
Having said that, if you ask the Atlantic Hockey Commissioner, I am sure she would tell you that all teams will play each other the same number of times but it may take X number of years. (Not sure how many). Certainly need that 12th team. There are many choices out there now, but it seems they are waiting for the perfect fit. (Not sure there is one). In the past names have come up (Navy, Binghamton, Utica, etc).
The 2022 Atlantic Hockey Playoffs were a Travesty. Dropping out the 9,10, 11 seeds on an unbalances schedule. The Administrators must have visited a Marijuana Dispensary before voting. Thank God they came to their senses.

Back in the 2010-11 season, AHA broke into two divisions, East and West. That year the East was much easier as RIT and AFA were really loaded. We easily won the East division and earned a bye into the next round where we played Canisius, a wild card birth from the West and 8 seed overall. Beat them 2 games to 1 before falling 3-2 to AFA in the semifinals.
The experiment did not last long. Geographically it would make sense to play 3 or 4 against Eastern teams and only 2 against the West, alternating sites each year. Another team like Stonehill would help scheduling. We have held our own against Hockey East foes this year and in recent memory. I think the men are better positioned to join HE and be a middle of the pack team than the women.

It does provide for equity over an extended amount of years but it locks in inequity every season depending on which teams are strong and weak that season.

You are right. Unfortunately, no way around it. Get a 12the team and end the inequity!! Would think that the coaches would really push for number 12 to try to up RPI

Some great quotes from Riga. Love what he said about linear development, the portal, and recruiting. Seems like neither he nor the team want to wait so long in between Thursday's regular season finale and their second round home series (bye in the first).

I find it interesting that men’s hockey has clearly been the most active among our sports to take advantage of the portal - will we see more activity from our basketball teams ?

I think that both hoops coaches prioritize recruiting High School players who will stay for 4 years. Paulsen will consider transfers if needed. I do not know MM’s thoughts on the portal.

So third if SHU wins in regulation; anything else HC is second.
At least that's the way I think it should go.
