Some observers noted that the Caitlin Clark - fan post-game collusion a few weeks ago was a serious issue — perhaps necessitating a ban on college basketball fans ‘stormin the court’, others were not so sure. Now we may have seen a serious player injury under similar circumstances: Wake Forest fans collide with Duke star Kyle Filipowski while storming court Kyle Filipowski remembered seeing the images of Iowa women's basketball star Caitlin Clark being accidentally knocked down by a fan storming the court after her team suffered an upset loss.
Roughly a month later, Duke's 7-foot star found himself part of the same discussion on the dangers of court- storming, his right leg wrapped in plastic to fasten an icebag to his kneecap. And he wasn't happy about what had just happened.
"Just like any other upset game where the fans rush the court, all hell goes crazy," Filipowski said after being hobbled in a collision with an on-rushing fan after the eighth-ranked Blue Devils lost at Wake Forest on Saturday. "Just trying to get my way off the court, and you know, you've got these crazy college students just doing whatever they want. It's got to be a little more protective when things like that happen."www.cbsnews.com/news/duke-star-kyle-filipowski-collides-wake-forest-fans-storming-court/

At least this is something we don't have to worry about for awhile

/\ /\ As I was posting this it occurred to me that our men's basketball team is probably not upsetting Duke at our sold-out home court any time soon.
But we might see some changes at other basketball venues due to these two latest incidents.

If these big-time schools can pay their coaches big money, like the NBA; they can afford the security that the NBA deploys at their venues. You don't see this kind of thing when a pro team wins a championship anymore.

We are always good for a court storm if we win the PL championship, but even that may be a few years away (at least with us having home court)

I heard that Boston tv or ESPN showed an overhead photo of filipowski extending his leg to allegedly trip and shove the court stormer
If that is true and there is such a clip it would be equally disappointing.

I'll be sure not to knock anyone over when I run/stumble/limp on to the court after the next PL championship.....but they have to give me enough room to do my version of The Curley Shuffle.

Here's the clip/angle, personally I don't think it shows anything close to what you're suggesting:

I didn’t see it and said allegedly He did extend his leg, whether it was normal stride or intended to trip I have no bloody idea, and yes he did extend his arms to protect himself or shove the individual away My suggestion was no matter what happened it is a sad and disappointing reality ofstorming the court. x.com/cbbcontent/status/1761512650637213932?s=61&t=WfS6kh0SBYsUWgPDrRcEGw

If a 6-10 well-built athlete is pissed off and wants to level some average person, that person is probably in an ambulance somewhere.

The SEC gives substantial fines to member schools when there is a court storming. It has not totally stopped the practice, but has limited it. Let all college hoops follow.

In 2024, many people just don’t give a bleep about other people. It may just be that simple. We have had court storming forever. The fans have managed not to run into opposing players for the most part. Now it’s happened twice in a month with two of the best college athletes in the country. Just walk around in the world and you’ll see plenty of good examples of people just being crappy to other people either intentionally or because they’re so absorbed in their own world that they just don’t care.

^ Right. Stormed the court yesterday when Worcester State won everybody survived! D-3 fans can’t generate the velocity and striking power of their D-1 counterparts. So there’s a lower likelihood of injury….

^ Right. Stormed the court yesterday when Worcester State won everybody survived! 14,700 at the Wake Game. FWIW Everybody survived (but a few fans ran blindly into a [very] large Duke player).
