First, kudos to the Women BBall team for another outstanding season, two in a row now!!!
Thought this would be a good exercise given how, where and why it came about…
1.) What was the first season of women’s basketball at Holy Cross? For example, we just completed the 2023 - 2024 season.
2.) Who was the coach of the first women’s basketball team?
3.) What division did they play in?
4.) What was their Won/Loss record for that year?
5.) Who was Head of Female Athletics at that time?
Only the one who answers all 5 questions correctly will be declared the Winner Par Excellence!!!
When someone gets all 5 correct answers I will reveal how this came about!!!
Have at it!!!

I knew the woman who was in charge of women's athletics early on. Her father or uncle was Bernie Bagdis, who was a business partner of Frank Ofstring at one time, she had blonde hair and later went into planning travel for college teams and her husband owned a bagel shop in Holden, as I recall. I just can't remember her name. She also may not have been the first person in charge of women’s athletics.

Wasn’t Linda George there from the beginning? She had a title having to do with women’s sports in the early 80s.
I am confident that they played in AIAW D3. I don’t think Togo coached from the beginning so I can’t say who the coach was. I would think hoops was among the first women’s sports so I’ll say 73-74. I will guess they went 4-12.

After trolling through some ancient copies of the Crusader, the women's AD I believe was Diane Sepavich. Additional little know fact Dupre's successor was then undergrad at HC, Pat Corcoran. Fellow Jr Billy Griffiths was hired as ass't coach. Apparently this was at the suggestion of Ron Perry Sr.

The whole athletic department was a shell of what it is today. The head hockey coach was a full time teacher at Hudson High School who coached HC after school when he started. AD RP,sr. came from a Catholic high school and knew how to stretch a buck. A different universe from an indoor football practice field, NIL and the portal.

In fairness, until Togo took over in 1980, it was a shoestring budget. I don't believe they did much recruiting, started nearly ever season w/ tryouts. First scholarships were under Togo

The women's hoop team was coached by two members of the Class of '77, Pat Corcoran and Bill Griffiths, for three or four years - two of those years while Pat and Bill were still students!!

I saw a game in 73-74; it was at the field house and to the best of my recollection, it wasn't the only game going on in the gym at the time. I don't even think they got to use the glass boards (i.e., the men's practice court).
I think Joe Phelan's sister was the star of the team.

So, a couple of weeks ago, while going into Saturday mass, a woman, who I have known all my life, was 3 years behind me in school and knew that I was an HC grad asks if I was following the HC women's basketball team... I said of course and am thrilled that they are in the tournament! Following some further discussion about the team, she asked if I knew that she was the coach of the first HC women's basketball team? I told her that I did not know or I had forgotten it. Sharon Dupre, a 1970 graduate of Bridgewater State Teachers College was the coach of the first HC women's basketball team, the 1974 -75 season. They were 0 - 12 in Division 3. At Bridgewater, she was the roommate of Diane Sepavich, who became the then titled Coordinator of Womens Athletics at HC. Thus, the Sepavich/Dupre connection. One thing that Sharon shared with me was that the team was only allowed 1 hour of practice a day on a court that was shared with the fencing team! So practice only at one basket! Sharon eventually went on to a very successful teaching/coaching career at Blackstone Millville Regional High School. Diane was also involved with girls field hockey at Algonquin Regional High School, where I spent my entire career, some 35 years. Last fall I attended the 50th Algonquin HS reunion for the class of 1973. Ironically, Diane was also there and we spent some time talking about those days long gone! I have attached a picture of Diane from that 50th reunion! So, as Paul Harvey would say... "now you know the rest of the story..."! From the HC women's Basketball archives.... Named coach followed by team captains! 1974-1975% 0-12 .000 Sharon Dupre 1975-1976% 8-7 .533 Pat Corcoran Mary Ellen Phelan 1976-1977% 8-9 .471 Pat Corcoran Gail Buschmann, Maria Rota 1977-1978% 5-10 .533 Pat Corcoran Barbara Kelley, Heidi Lewis 1978-1979% 7-11 .389 Kevin McAuley Margaret Dempsey, Barbara Kelley HAPPY EASTER EVERYONE!!!

Yes, both Mark "the Bird" Fidrych and Mike Sherman were math students of mine... also coached both in basketball. Sherm was Algonquin class of '73 and was at the reunion last fall! Was a great time rehashing old times! Sadly, Mark left us too soon... both outstanding men!!!
