This concept has been out there for awhile. The Athletic had a very informative article on the subject in the fall.

Careful. Why would the players need the schools if they are already getting paid and are the attraction for viewers, attendees and endorsements?

Careful. Why would the players need the schools if they are already getting paid and are the attraction for viewers, attendees and endorsements? The players need to be on a team, right? But once they become employees they can be employees of any team. Why does the big network money and money from sponsors like Fan Duel go to colleges instead of the players who generate it? NIL could be the first step onto a slippery slide. The concept of players owning their name, image and likeness can be logically extended. However, it would take large investments to duplicate the infrastructure of the college game which is owned by the colleges. And it would be after tax at risk investment money, not from tax deductible donations and tuition and fees. Unless some Elon Musk types decide to disrupt another industry, I think college football is safe.
