Wonder if he’s surprised that betting on NBA basketball, including his own team (to lose, BTW), is a bad idea. I can’t imagine anyone coming to his defense on this one (with an obvious exception regarding pro forma union appeals).

Certainly the league could be understanding and make an exception. A $1,000 fine and a "don't do it again" slap on the butt should be enough.

Betting on your team to lose in a parlay, while egregious, isn't nearly as egregious as betting on the "unders" on your performance and then begging out of a game for not feeling well after 3 minutes.

I think both are equally deplorable to be honest. Kid deserves to face the consequences. Maybe he can learn his lesson and get his basketball life together overseas. This is almost as bad as Donaghy scandal with exception of fact that Tim manipulated games over a longer period of time (point shaving) and obviously was older and more mature.

Donaghy is the worst of the worst. An official paid to be impartial, an employee of the league directly, whose decisions directly can shape the outcome of games... a player TRYING to lose can't guarantee it as much as a ref can.

Yeah, its splitting hairs on a deplorable act...so I'm not actually disagreeing, but just viewing it a little differently, perhaps from the perspective of a potential gambler. While he arguably can influence if his team loses or not, he does not singularly control that outcome as he did with people betting the unders on his performance and then he pulls himself from the game before hitting the over...same with Donaghy. I did see an old interview with Shaq this morning where he sat next to some high ranking bookie in a bar or club...bookie told him what he did and told Shaq for his sake he may not want to be seen with him. Shaq said he wasn't worried, but asked if he had any players on his payroll...he said "No, you guys make too much, but we have the next best thing...the refs"....now with online gambling you can place so many obscure bets, you could monetize Johntay Porter...years ago there likely wasn't a line on unders for someone like that and there was no value in a bookie having a 12th man on his side.

I think most of Donaghy's manipulation related to the over under, although it could tangentially dictate who wins. If a game is a blowout, the ref can't really influence who wins...but he can slow down or speed up the pace of the game and the scoring depending on how many fouls he calls.

Yep, "point shaving" is the word that was used in the media when that scandal came to light. He basically manipulated garbage time via calls/non-calls more so than influencing actual game results.

Which is why the NBA came down so hard on this violation....If not for Donaghy, this penalty would have been lighter

There is certainly precedent for zero tolerance on gambling on your sport. See MLB
