This doesn't have to get political (I hope).
I was a freshman in 69-70. The Kent State shootings caused Holy Cross and many, many other schools to shut down the academic year early.
Because I wasn't particularly interested in it, being a freshman, I don't recall what happened after that, just that I showed up for school in September and it was pretty much business as usual.
Given we have some 1970s here, was there or wasn't there a commencement ceremony?

There indeed was a commencement on Fitton Field (where it should be!) and Fr. Raymond Swords, S.J. '38, outgoing president of the College was our commencement speaker instead of the usual MA governor, at the specific request, of our Class. He got an extended standing ovation for his years of leadership during the most turbulent time in Holy Cross' history. Included in those years were assassinations; Kent State (finals cancelled); Black Student walkout; just to name a few. Read Fr. K's book. The man was burnt out but for my money, was the best president in Holy Cross history, bar none. (Go on, talk about his successor, Fr. Brooks). But, from memory, to that time, Fr. Swords was the longest serving president in the College's history until Fr. Brooks shattered that record.

Thanks. Recall that Fr. Swords was stepping down and Fr. Brooks taking over. Not much else.
I didn't have a normal end-of-semester until my third one (the aforementioned walkout causing a disruption in fall of '69).

The peace sign that was painted on top of the ROTC building during the strike remained there for years The building, Campion, housed AFROTC, now the home of the Chaplains offices. In '71/72 an incendiary device (Molotov cocktail?) was thrown through the window into the Marine office, housed with the other NROTC offices in O'Kane. The report of the NCIS investigation is in the HC archive. AIR it dismissed the incident as not serious i.e. more symbolic... the work of an amateur or amateurs.

Went home to Michigan shortly after the shootings and drove back to HC with my parents for the graduation (6/10/70 I think). There was no way they were going to miss out on the event after supporting me through the 4 yrs. at HC. I heartily concur with sader1970’s comments about Fr. Swords. Our class had a special bond with him as a result of the eventful ‘69-‘70 academic year. As I recall, it was a beautiful sunny day at Fitton Field…a lasting final memory as a HC student.

You are right on all counts. It was 6/10/1970 as my diploma on my wall shows that and it was a gorgeous day weather wise. Not a cloud in the beautiful blue sky. It might have been a hot day temperature wise but I sure didn’t notice that. As an aside, we are down to 400 left in the Class. Hopefully it will be a long while before we get down to the Spartan 300! 😂
