Believe we are going to Army at some point. Maybe 2023?

To quote my late mother: "I could be dead by then." (She said this for at least 15 years before she passed on).

2018 schedule has four home games, and five road games in a row. Interested to see how they do vs Furman; a kid in my neighborhood plays (well, at least he gets on the field; he's the holder) for them.

Hope they beat Buffalo this year - could be a winnable FBS game for the PL. Last time the two met was when Jamaal Branch was getting carries and Colgate KILLED the Bulls.
'Gate played and lost to Furman back in 2009 though they have been a down program of late. W&M, UNH and Army all look to be very tough non-conference games in 2018.

ESPNU er al: smart scheduling strategy! The 2017 Colgate-Cal Poly game is to be nationally televised on ESPNU: This Sunday telecast in late August represents the only FCS game on tap that weekend. It is one of just five games on the national landscape that final weekend of August. In addition, with the teams representing both coasts, another audience building technique buttresses this scheduling niche Colgate already has a large student populaton representing California and the West coast, in addition to a large and growing alumni contingent throughout the area. Conveniently, Cal Poly is equidistant to LA and S.F.. gocolgateraiders.com/news/2017/3/8/raiders-open-football-slate-on-espnu.aspx

Is Cal committed to a return game in Hamilton? Is this a pay game for 'gate? If the answer to both those questions is "no," it doesn't make a lot of sense despite the thousands (hundreds?) of Raider alums who might watch on the U anyway.
That's my initial reaction but then again, I am used to Holy Cross marketing. 😊

Think both teams will get money from ESPNU ?
Colgate continues to have a very proactive approach in OOC scheduling in football.

IMO, No way ESPN is paying anything to telecast this game. the schools have zero bargaining power. Can you imagine either school saying 'no thanks' to national tv exposure when ESPN says they'll put the game on the U, but there's nothing in it for the schools. This is the reality of fcs football. an awful lot of red ink. and in '18 the 'gate is on a plane to south carolina to play furman. these are expensive trips.

Each school seems to have its own strategy and unique circumstance. Having fewer "home" games in Hamilton has been a given since the 30's when the Red Raiders barnstormed around the country. For Colgate the alumni base and current and prospective students in LA and SF symbolizes how geographical diversity has been carefully baked into 'Gate's business model over the past decade. May make little sense for other schools. No harm.

No offense taken at all. In fact, I sort of envy what Colgate does. Not the school, mind you, just the approach to athletics. It wasn't too long ago, when the Crusaders made an annual trip to California and I personally thought and tried to pitch, unsuccessfully, a Holy Cross game vs. Sacramento State for historical reasons. The AD and assistant football coach at Sac State were all for it but said it came down to money but would have loved to play some eastern schools, especially Holy Cross. TPTB at Holy Cross, however, had no interest in a cross-country trip.
We played St. Mary's home and away, both close games, splitting both in '99 and '02 and played San Diego home and away losing the away game by a point in double OT in '03 and losing another close one at home in '04.
With the enhanced desire for more geographical diversity, you never know if a west coast home and home can become a reality.

One tough factor in trying to schedule West Coast opponents home-and-home is that while we are interested in recruiting in their territory they likely are not interested in recruiting in New England.....

Well at this point Colgate is looking up at us in the Presidents Cup standings so wouldn't say I am envying what they are doing in athletics these days.

Whatevah, keep disparaging New England recruits.....nevah mind that Flaherty (Beverly, MA) was probably the best kid in the HC football program the last couple years. Not saying that MA (or New England) is superior or even on par to other parts of the country but to continually dismiss them (as you do here) isn't helping mattahs. There are good players in New England...but keep dismissing them as your boy Gilmore continues to go 4-7 every year recruiting nationally.

I hoop--how many Division-1 players does New England produce each year? What percentage of them do you think we could land if we decided to focus our recruiting on New England?

Admittedly a lot less than Texas, California, Ohio etc....but it's not like decent football isn't being played in New England. particularly at an FCS-level. Holy Cross historically recruited well in Massachusetts (as well as nationally)...there are some very solid high school programs in Massachusetts that turn out 1-AA talent every year...my guess is that the football recruiting is being done to balance out the geographical diversity even moreso for the school today.

As a comparison, HC roster has 10 players from New England. Harvard has 10 and Dartmouth has 6.
bc has 29 players from New England

We can make fun of our cousins at BC....Lord knows I do....but the fact that an ACC program has 29 players from New England speaks to the fact that New England is not the "football wasteland" that it is made out to be by some here....

Hey, they won a bowl game last year....overall point being, HC football recruiting has been good when it doesn't dismiss home-cooking (New England/Northeast recruiting) and augments that recruiting with kids from Ohio, Michigan, Texas etc...
