Su bject line from the stu dent newspaper.
Rather than re-open the other thread in the basketball foru m, I'll start a new one here.
From Deadspin. deadspin.com/georgetown-shoul d-fire-john-thompson-iii-and-probably-1792838026
The comments are interesting, and some parallel the lamentations and the perceived, elevated sense of relevance that can sometimes be fou nd on this board.

1. The former coach does not "hang around campus". That "special chair" you cite is actually the chair of the former long-time sports information director at Georgetown, Bill Shapland. When Shapland died at the age of 55, Thompson (and former trainer Lorry Michel) sit there as a tribute to the man who held that job for almost 30 years. And on a practical matter, the size of arena seats do not lend themselves to a 75-year old of any size, much less someone at 6-10. 2. I can't speak to standards but nearly every Georgetown team is under .500 this year except soccer: men's and women's lacrosse, for example, is a combined 1-7. Would you consider academic standards as holding back Georgetown football too? 3. For those who care, Thompson applied for a slots license 21 years ago, so this is not even close to news. The president told him to withdraw the application. He did. Next conspiracy theory...

DFWHoya, thanks for clarifying about the special chair. My own belief is that his presence courtside is not helpful. I would say the same if RW decided to park himself at the end of Kevin Willard's bench, or if RP could be found sitting behind the team at every UMinn home game. I'm pretty sure GU has a box at the Verizon Center from where he could watch the games.
On a brighter note for GU, the National Park Service has finished its EIS and GU can proceed with a new boathouse much nearer the campus.

I'd love to see RW at a game. See him at Louisville often.

Must be common in the Balt/Wash area, Loyola has a terrific high school band play at all their home games
