First they changed the nickname to "Pride" and then nine years later pulled the plug on the FCS football program.
(Some think Hofstra's Pride refers to a group of lions and others think it is the emotion. Whatever the case, rarely have I seen such talented football players at such a relatively unknown school - Colston, Colon and Bowen all graduated from Hofstra the same year and each went on to 10 year NFL careers.)

You would have loved the NFL before the southern major schools started recruiting black athletes. Players came from places you never heard of.

Did Wayne Chrebet go to Hofstra?

Yes, he graduated several years prior to the three long-time NFL players I mentioned.

Did Wayne Chrebet go to Hofstra? He did, from 91-94. Hofstra was transitioning from D3 to 1-AA at the time. By the late 1990s they were a very solid FCS program. Our only meeting was a loss to the Flying Dutchmen 24-9 in 1995. I think they may have been angling for PL football membership at one point but as we know were never invited. Ultimately joined the A-10 which morphed into the CAA. Dropped football after the 2009 season.

Doug Shanahan, who also played a little lacrosse, was a Hofstra 2-time FCS All American who did not go into the NFL and was the best athlete I’d ever seen in person on the college football field.
The Hofstra Pride dropped football the same year (2009) as Northeastern. Lack of fan interest and high cost. They (Hofstra) had made the FCS playoffs five times between 1995 and 2001 and sent fifteen players into the NFL between 1995 and the end of the program.

Super FCS college career: “Giovanni was a three-time All-American and a Payton Award finalist as a senior, as well as the 1999 National Scholar-Athlete of the Year. He was selected to play in both the 1999 Blue-Grey Senior Bowl and the 2000 Senior Bowl...” The amount of college talent that place accumulated was simply amazing.

I was on the Assumption campus over the weekend and came across a small group of students. I heard them talking about HC. At first I thought they were talking about HC poaching Chesney, but the were laughing at all the fuss over the mascot

But seriously, folks, what if the BOT next month says the Crusader is no more, how many of you will stop considering themselves as “Crusaders?”
As for me, I am in the Mr. Ford ‘60 and Fr. Earle Markey that I will ALWAYS be a Crusader (with the armor, helmet, shield and a lance).
The dozen or so BOT members come and go, just like presidents. Holy Cross is an institution that spans generations and the will of those men and women will ultimately determine whether the Crusader remains. He cannot be “disappeared” by fiat.

I will probably become more likely to use the phrase 'Saders in my cheering just to be obnoxious. Of course, I'm also the guy that until Digital federal Credit Union writes me a marketing check, I refer to the civic center in Worcester as the Centrum

Tom, you sure you don't want to change your avatar? I know a great picture of someone wearing a true, old-fashioned "Crusader" sweatshirt!

I suspect that if TPTB change the name, I will still think of our athletic teams as Crusaders. I will not let this bother me enough to cause me to change the way I think of the College and my experiences as part of its community.

I will not let this bother me enough to cause me to change the way I think of the College and my experiences as part of its community. I also use those names. I follow the guidelines used by TV networks. When the bowls started taking on corporate naming rights (Fed-Ex Orange Bowl, Mobil Cotton Bowl, etc) the networks ignored them. The logos would appear on the field, but other than that no mention on TV. That is until the sponsors started buying ads on the broadcasts of their named bowls. Suddenly every announcer and graphic stopped calling it the Fiesta Bowl and started calling it the Tostitos Fiesta Bowl. So, when Travelers starts paying me to promote their insurance, I will abandon use of the GHO
