At the bottom of page 1, in the box as to what there is in today's paper, the reference is to a story "Behind the Name Gonzaga". The story fills 80% of the first page of the sports section (for those with an electronic subscription only) including an 15 by 20 inch lithograph of St. Aloysius Gonzaga. An amazing read on his life and the Jesuit grounding of the university. The entire Jesuit order must be so proud today. The success of the school's hoop program is almost an after thought in the article.
The message in the article which I found almost as valuable as the history of the saint after whom the school was named, is the view that the school's hoops program has brought it national recognition. "most know the university only because of its basketball team". As to whom to root for, the author of a book on Aloysius Gonzaga, opined, "Any Jesuit school would take precedence over any other school".
The key to Holy Cross being Holy Cross is its Jesuit tradition, not its ill conceived athletic affiliation with Lafayette, Lehigh & Bucknell. Perhaps Father Brook's might have been more precise in his surgical intervention in the athletic future of Alma Mater.
In fairness to Father Brook's point of view, take a look at the article next to the lithograph entitled, "Stain Permeates Basketball Blueblood" on the North Carolina academic scandal.

Purp said "The key to HC being HC is its Jesuit tradition." I disagree. I believe the key up to 1954 was its athletic tradition. Since then I believe the key has been its academic (not necessarily Jesuit) tradition. In my decades of experience along the East Coast, HC is thought of as a rigorous school that produces outstanding results. Most folks would not know it's Jesuit.

Your decades of experience along the East Coast must have been along the Northeast Coast. Sadly, HC is barely thought of, or known of, in the Southeast. BC is kicking our ass down here.

Being in the ACC and getting their ass kicked in FB & BB by being an automatic W in towns such as Clemson, Atlanta, Tallahassee and Miami sure helps BC's "notoriety" in the southeast.
