After what happened to the SMU program, that still hasn't recovered fully and may never, the death penalty will never be applied again for football and men's basketball. You can quote me on that.

It serves SMU right for the school's skulduggery. Is the sport of college football diminished in any way by the decline of SMU??
If UNC does not get the death penalty, let's think of other punishments, e.g. some combination of Losing all scholarships for a couple of years or maybe being limited to 1 or 2 per year; being barred from post season play for 4 or 5 years, having no OOC home games for a few years, changing name from Tar Heels to Cheaters and putting that on uniforms for a few years. I'll try to think of some more......

I would be stunned if the NCAA had the onions to give North Carolina anything but a slap on the wrist.

SMU was largely made an example of in an environment where they weren't extreme outliers, it really was the wild west in the southwest conference back during that time period. Judging by things like what recently went on at Ole Miss (formally) or the car collection thing of various bama players on the USC forum (informally) it is the cost of doing business as a major college program. They will probably lose a few scholarships for women's basketball maybe a couple in football and get a bowl ban for a year. At the end of the day, the NCAA is made up of schools, and schools have seen that resurrecting the death penalty is something that could kill their athletic programs also. Not to mention the real fear that the P5 creates their own governing body if they feel like they are being punished for the cost of doing business.

I would be stunned if the NCAA had the onions to give North Carolina anything but a slap on the wrist. Bob Ryan asked two rhetorical questions in last night's 30-for-30 about Coach Cal? 1. Would the NCAA had come down as hard on Memphis if they had WON that final instead of lost? 2. Win or lose, if that had been North Carolina or some other elite program instead of Memphis, what would they have ruled?
