Just found this surfing around. It's a bit rough, in b&w, no audio etc but it's a good look at that team in general. The first 18 or so minutes show Dartmouth on offense, the last 18 or so vice versa.
Couple of quick takeaways, we ran the ball more than I remembered (or we did on that day anyway), Gordie was faster than I remember, the defense didn't get the notoriety (they usually don't) it probably should have received that year.
You can buy a lot of old football videos (HC-BC games etc) at footballvideos.com (where this came from I believe) but they are a pit pricey...around $110.00 each for 12 minutes of film sometimes.

Think I noted HC using a variety of defenses in that tape....5-2-4, 3-4-4, 5-3-3 plus a few corner blitz packages. Also, those kids really flew to the ball - 7 or 8 every time - on pass plays or wide runs.
Talent and coaching back then !
Thanks for posting 87

Instead I watched the Western Carolina game right next to it and even though we lost that game, the talent was appreciably better than today. Hard hitting, sure tackling, a running game . . . . miss those things.

Talent/overall level of play (on a par with today) for HC football was so much better then. Joining the Colonial/Patriot League for football set the program back so far...only just now starting to recover from that 25 years later.
If you look around on that youtube channel, you can find some old HC football highlights...I saw the HC-Dartmouth game on the 1966 highlights for Dartmouth football today on that channel for instance.

The famous mud bowl game when Jack Lentz and company broke the nation's longest win streak, played in a deluge.

Dartmouth gets a couple of garbage time td's late in the game in order to avoid looking like a red headed step child.

I agree. Those '81 thru '91 Holy Cross football teams often overwhelmed their opposition in every facet of the game. Talent and coaching. Dartmouth game 30 years ago is a good example. Now that scholarships are back, we may once again lure some kids with legitimate professional aspirations. At the risk of raising a stat I've noted twice before, the potential recruits know we haven't had a player drafted in 25 years. IMHO we took a VERY strong team into the Patriot League in 1986, much of our Patriot League opposition was a bit soft, and the early HC Patriot League results reflected that. The graduation of the last scholarship players essentially coincided with a levelling of talent in the PL --- HC slipping more than others. Since about '92 (with a few exceptions of course) we haven't had the talent level to match our '81 thru '91 success.
