This was the first time that I had ever attended a Varsity Club Hall of Fame event. It was truly an outstanding evening. I went mainly to be there for Bobby Foley's induction. I played on a local men's league team with Bobby many (too many) years ago and he was my son's History teacher at St. John's in Shrewsbury. Bobby is an all around great person and a most worthy recipient of this honor. I was fortunate to be seated at dinner with several of Bobby's teammates, Billy Canavan, Pete O'Connor and Jack (the Shot) Foley! I had never met them before but watched and listened on radio to them during their playing years from '59 to '62 when I was in High School. After dinner I spoke with them and mentioned this and Jack the Shot replied: "Now you're giving away your age"! I also mentioned to him that I well remembered the night he scored 55 against UCONN to which he promptly replied 56! What a treat is was to meet and to shake hands with this legendary HC player!
In addition I met Dr. Paul Shannon's son who spoke on behalf of the family and accepted his dad's honorary induction. I related to him how his dad treated two of our daughters back in the late 60's and early 70's. They were both born with congenital hip dysplasia and he put them in Freyka splints which eventually corrected the problem. Dr. Shannon was a fixture at the Hart Center for many years, always sitting in the corner of the first row of bleachers at the concession end.
I also reconnected with football standout Denny Golden and his wife Monica (we both lived in Hopkinton, MA in late '60's and early 70's) and spent some time talking hoops with Togo. All in all it was a fantastic and wonderful evening. Congratulations to all the recipients and to those who put together this event!
