Any known HC interest in either brother at this time?

Any known HC interest in either brother at this time? .I don't know. I would guess that someone would have to be a pretty special kid (like Alex) to get much of D-I look at a place like Whitinsville-Christian. It seems like most kids today, if they have D-I aspirations, jump ship from small programs and go prep. A hidden gem in a tiny D-III program is rare

There was a kid in my area who seemed really good as a frosh and soph in high school. I think I sent his name to MB and staff back in the day. Anyway, he left his small public high school for prep school, reclassified and now has offers from a boatload of big-time programs like UNC and Arizona.

A kid from my hometown, Chris Doherty, has bucked the trend and stayed at Marlboro High School. He does have several low-mid major D-1 offers. However, in terms of NERR rankings, he went from being ranked (I think) #2 in NE as a freshman to #10 now. I don't know if that is in part to his not moving on to a prep.
Tom - you might be right about the younger VBs being cousins to AVB - I peeked at an old media guide, and Alex's profile noted he had 1 brother and 2 sisters. I think the brother was in high school at least part of the time Alex was at HC.

Dave--perhaps it wasn't so much a matter of the player not going to prep school but more because new competitors from outside New England chose to come to New England prep schools for their senior years. The competitive pool was infused with new players from NY, PA, and elsewhere

The assumption is those D-III kids haven't played against decent competition so it's harder to evaluate if a player is good ir just a big fish in a little pond. If you have game, you can get low/mid-major D-I college attention playing at a D-I Mass high school. If this Doherty kid had jumped to a prep school, his rankings might have been higher and he might have gotten better looks, but he might also have been buried at the end of the bench.

It's not just prep schools these days. Don't forget about AAU. That is where RW saw AVB, and liked him. I do agree with the big fish in the little pond. Soooo many people just don't understand that. Having been associated with a little pond, I frequently saw (and heard) this, especially from fans. AAU is where these fish get to show how they fit in with the big fish, and is where coaches can see the whole "school".

Thought I would bring this back up with some new and verified information....
While working the MA State Primary election on Tuesday, I had the opportunity to speak with Justin VanderBaan's grandmother who was also working at the election. First off, Justin is not Alex's brother. He is Alex's cousin. He is now a Junior at Whitinsville Christian School. So he is Class of 2020. He plays AAU basketball with "Wright Way Skills". He has traveled around the country with them even to Las Vegas. As previously announced, he has a scholarship offer from BC. He is getting many calls from colleges around the country. She did not know if Holy Cross has called but she would be very happy to see him go to Holy Cross. I did mention to her that Blake Verbeek from Calvin Christian HS is a freshman at HC. She knows of Calvin Christian and was going to pass that along to Justin. Now that he is a junior I'm sure he will garner more attention. Being 7' and playing at a small school in a D3 league has its challenges. The level of competition is certainly not anywhere near what it is at the top prep schools. I'll try to get to some of his games this year and report back.

Heard yesterday from a reliable source that several ACC schools have been in contact with Justin. When you are 7' 1" you can gather a lot of attention!

Heard yesterday from a reliable source that several ACC schools have been in contact with Justin. When you are 7' 1" you can gather a lot of attention! 7-1 will get you to one of these schools. It may not keep you there if you are slow developing or have deficiencies you can't overcome at that level (see Fingleton, Neil) . On the other hand, Holy Cross and similar places don't redshirt. So there are arguments both ways.
