I have no doubts that Louisville will recover very quickly from whatever penalties are imposed upon the school. The level of support that the school and city have for the program is an extraordinary asset.

IMHO, I agree that they will be better after this "loss" (addition by subtraction).

That's an interesting article and the president of Macalester makes a good case. Unfortunately, if players were allowed to profit from their celebrity we'd see them doing things like selling ghost written biographies and post- season journals and the faithful fans snapping them up to funnel $$$ to the players. The recruitment pitch would be : "Come to State U and after freshman season you'll get your 1/15th share of the book proceeds. Last year the players netted $35,000 each"..........I remember living in Georgia at the time of Herschel Walker's time at UGA and hearing on talk radio that fans proposed that he start an insurance agency after freshman season "and we can all then buy insurance from him". Boosters would run wild with support schemes in my opinion

Let's remember the player who, for the life of me I can't remember his name at the moment, was a scholarship basketball player at, gasp, UNLV. On the side he sold commercial real estate. He was a talented salesman, could sell coal to Newcastle. What a bonanza! Think an alum or two rented through him to help out the Runnin' Rebs?
All this talk about paying the players a little money and all the problems go away is nonsense. UFlorida offers Cam Newton a $100,000 bonus to matriculate at the Swamp. Auburn doubles it. Alabama doubles it again. Many thought giving the players a little sex would be OK. It wasn't. The Dads had to get some too. Might their friends be next? A friend of mine had a son who had a scholarship to a Nevada school. Book money? The players took it to the casinos. Gone baby gone.
A college scholarship at HC and other schools is worth a hell of a lot of cold cash. That should be enough. What they should do is let the really good players sign with the pros, direct from high school to the NBA or an NBA farm team or Europe. Get the pros out of college sooner rather than later. Forget one and done. That's not good enough for the very talented kid who might need the money back home for his single Mom who works third shift at the local potato chip factory.

Absolute insanity. That money should go to the college, but I guess it's a de facto part of the coach's compensation. Rick's good friend, the leading pm drive-time radio guy, was talking about the absurdity of it today on air

I've not yet applied but do have my phone at hand should the Cardinals come for me. Today's C-J has a piece on AD Tom Jurich: he has supporters trying to save his job--holding signs in front of the admin building, etc. I believe it will come down to an upcoming vote of the 13 members of the BOT

They are likely to get probation. Unlikely to get any jail time. In my opinion. Btw, who was the victim in this matter.

Big time hoops and football have been far from amateur for some time.

Big time hoops and football have been far from amateur for some time. True, and the type of people now being prosecuted have been around for some time as well...all to the detriment of amateur sports. Just because they are just being charged now, it does not mean that this sort of behavior has just started.

It's still hard for me to fathom that RW's best friend in life is a no good sleaze ball like Pitino and he left us in a horrible position to bail him out.
