came across a 1956 Dell pre season hoops mag with Heinsohn on the cover and with the lead All American article over Russell so here are four questions that the issue prompted As a junior Heinsohn led HC in 3 categories. Name them Bill Russell as a junior blocked how many shots in one game ? what well known football player was chosen as one of the East’s 10 best ballers ? what other 2 sports did he star in while in college

I'll take a shot:
As a junior Heinsohn led HC in 3 categories. Name them Scoring, rebounds and fouls
Bill Russell as a junior blocked how many shots in one game? 15
what well known football player was chosen as one of the East’s 10 best ballers ? Jimmy Brown, Syracuse
what other 2 sports did he star in while in college Lacrosse and Track

The cover of that magazine was my original avatar on the old excoboard.
Points and rebounds seem like easy answers for Heinsohn. I've heard it said he never had an assist so I won't go there. Wild stab. . . field goal attempts
For a football guy, given the era, about the only name I can come up with is Jim Brown. If he's a top 10 baller and we're talking about it in the basketball issue, I'll say he played basketball. Most stud running backs used to also run track so I'll call that the second.
I wouldn't know even a ball park for guessing how many Russell blocked in a game

As well, I have heard people say he was the best lacrosse player in the country as well.

No one has the third Heinsohn category. No one is even close to Russell’s blocks. Jimmy Brown, after getting on the hoops team late as a soph due to football season, averaged 16 ppg in the last 11 games, which had Dell choose him as one of the 10 best in the East. As I have posted here, he is the only Long Island baller to have back to back 50 point games. He was indeed the best lax hs and College player. As a track athlete he was a star decathlete. When he had time to practice in two spring sports, I have no idea. Best athlete ever ?

Proud of Brown as a Long Islander and certainly one of the best athletes ever and a legend on L.I. for LAX.
As for time to play two spring sports, he did go to Syracuse as you know. 'nuf said.
Best athlete ever? Probably Jim Thorpe:

You are discussing some of the all-time greats in Brown, Thorpe, Russell and Chamberlain (who also starred in track and field as an outstanding shot putter and had he been eligible, might have set an Olympic record in that event). Some of their legendary stats were not kept officially at that time (such as blocked shots in hoops). And, even if they had been, the numbers can be deceptive. Russell's blocks, for example, were often to teammates while Chamberlain's were often out of play and simply gave the ball back to the opponent. Brown and Thorpe were multi-sport athletes and, because of that they stand above most others. I would say that Russell probably had a game with 20 or more blocked shots, but I would have no idea how to check.
If pressed to pick the greatest, I would have to go with Thorpe (and I was personally thrilled when the Olympic Committee returned his medals to his family).

Getting closer to Russell’s blocks. Hard to not select Brown as the G O A T when he arguably was the best ever in Football and lax, a successful, decathlete in College and a very good College basketball player

Looks as if the usual suspects have ceased to guess According to this mag, Heinsohn led HC in assists his junior year, as well as points and rebounds. Russell blocked 30 shots in one game
New trivia This mag credits Russell for inventing a new shot in college ( which I saw him do in the NBA) which I had never heard of, or seen anyone else do.

Was it what's now offensive goal tending I read somewhere that Russell routinely used to guide in teammates shots. In my opinion I think Russell is one of the most under appreciated athletes of all time. He was undoubtedly the greatest winner ever with 11 titles in 13 seasons with one of the two losses coming with him sitting out injured. His Last two championships truly proved his greatness as the Celtics were clearly not the best team in either season. In the first they beat the Sixer team that defeated them the year before and finished 8 games ahead of them in the regular season. In the second they finished in 4th place in their division and beat the Knicks team that won the championship the next year and the supposedly invincible Lakers with Chamberlain West and Baylor. Jordan is generally considered the GOAT but he never won a championship as an underdog and when he retired the first time the Bulls still won 55 games without him while the Celtics became a 34 win team without Russell.

A winner It was the guide, dropping the ball down in the hoop after either a pass or a teammate’s shot. Now offensive interference

I could be wrong (again) but my recollection was that the defensive goal tending rules were changed well before Bill Russell got to USF because of Bob Kurland, the first start 7-footer in the 1940's?? The point is that if that is correct, Russell's blocks were not just a matter of him standing under the basket and jumping to block shots even as they entered the cylinder

Correct What came later was offensive basket interference
