BROOKLYN, N.Y. – The Sacred Heart men's basketball team has been selected to finish fifth in the Northeast Conference, as the league released its preseason poll and its Preseason All-NEC Team at NEC Basketball Social Media Day at Barclays Center.
Senior forward Joseph Lopez was named to the Preseason All-NEC Team. A Third Team All-NEC selection last season, Lopez finished his first season as a Pioneer fourth in the NEC in blocks at 1.23 per game, fifth in rebounding at 8.5 per game, and sixth in field goal percentage at .565. He had 11 double-doubles last season, eight in conference play, and averaged 13.2 points per game.
The Pioneers return six of its top eight scorers from a year ago. SHU won double-digit games for the third straight year, and reached the NEC Tournament for the third consecutive season as well. As the eighth-seed in 2016, the Pioneers pushed eventual NEC champions Mount St. Mary's to the brink in the quarterfinals before falling 76-73.
This season marks the highest SHU has been picked in the poll since being sixth prior to the 2012-13 season. Saint Francis U is this season's preseason favorite, garnering nine first-place votes. Fairleigh Dickinson was second choice and received the remaining first place vote. Wagner, reigning NEC champions Mount St. Mary's, and the Pioneers round out the top-five. LIU Brooklyn was picked sixth, followed by Robert Morris, Bryant, Central Connecticut, and St. Francis Brooklyn.
SHU opens the 2017-18 season at the Pitt Center against Holy Cross on Nov. 10.

Methinks this is one of the five wins penciled in by CBC. Gotta win this game!

This will be a more experienced team than the 13-19 club that HC faced last year...essentially the same group. The Saders won that game 72-67, with Malachi hitting for 38 points.

This looks like a tough opener against what appears to be a veteran team. Anxious to see fow frosh fare in their first competition against D-! (albeit lower level) talent.

Random FYI - this is a 6:00 start - not the normal 7:00. I wouldn't want any Crusaders showing up at half time
Sacred Heart site has a link for video
Side note to annoy HC16 - Bruce Springsteen has been known to make mention of all the girls down at Sacred Heart (probably not the same one)

Wont be able to make the trip down. Prediction: All the running vs Assumption? Not so much vs SHU

Wont be able to make the trip down. Prediction: All the running vs Assumption? Not so much vs SHU let me guess... your rationale is that pb and cg are not as fast, tough, and are completely inept at handling full-court pressure as compared to the irreplaceable at. and that coach comedy's po is too slow-paced to ever push the tempo when warranted. i think i hit all of your recurrent disparaging comparisons and remarks about coach carmody and his recruits, but others may certainly fill in the blanks. back on planet earth, i think we will run against sacred heart when the opportunity presents itself, per carmody's comments at the coaches night and what we saw against assumption, and be patient when the numbers are not in our favor. which is what essentially every well-coached team does. it's not like every team runs and guns against poor competition and slows it down against better competition. in fact, teams with a dominant inside game or deliberately-paced identity rely on those strengths whether playing the little sisters of the poor or duke. i suggest you watch virginia, wisconsin, etc. play as testament to this fact. pace of play and identity are about the strengths of the roster and preferred style/pace of play first, and specific match-up with the opponent second. rw was expert at this. well-coached teams force their style and pace of play on the opponent. poorly-coached teams have the style and pace of play dictated to them. we need look no further than rw vs. mb at hc. coach carmody's pl tournament run was probably the best instance of the effect of strong coaching that i've seen since the early 90s when i began following hc. the 1-3-1 and creation of so many open 3's with the po (that malachi [especially], champion, and kc consistently executed and knocked down) was masterful in dispatching pretty solid teams on their home floor. however, carmody's regular season performance has obviously left something to be desired so far. was this due to a poor roster with a low ceiling over the course of a season or an inability to adapt? we'll find out a bit more this year and much more next year. personally, i expect us to be good by the end of this season and very good next year.

We have to accept there will be subtle and not so subtle jabs at Carm, Pine, and the players throughout the season from HC70 and Caro.

Was there anything subtle about your criticism of the coaching record of Bill Carmody at holy cross? The holy cross athletics programs across the board are suffering. Whom to blame? Athletic director Nate pine is a perfect candidate. Bill Carmody is an excellent coach. His recruiting is hampered by his own admission of not being a great salesman. I am on record saying that these six freshman if you could fast forward them to junior year, would beat the other seven players on the team. Bill Carmody had for him a fantastic recruiting year last year. More to come I hope. Go cross go!

CBC has a dry sense of humor. I believe his comment about not being a "great salesman" was meant along those lines. I think there will be more to come, both in future recruits and in this year's team.i

“Bruce Springsteen has been known to make mention of all the girls down at Sacred Heart”
Probably a reference Sacred Heart High in Vineland, not too far from Asbury Park (where the hombres in the song are) and Freehold. Maybe that’s where Sherry went to school.

Not unreasonably to assume that there will be fewer opportunities against a D-I team. Better players, fewer turnovers, getting back on D faster. I agree that HC will push when the opportunity presents itself, but I won't be surprised to see fewer opportunities.

Here's a prediction...Sacred Heart will be a tougher opponent than Assumption. So yeah, we may run less, or maybe not. We also may play different defenses. See you there

I would expect to see differences in HC play against an experienced D1 team (in a game that "counts") when compared to a DII team (with the game not counting). I hope that we get a good turnout of HC Fans. SHU averaged only 453 fans at home games last season. Their opener may be a bit better than that, but IMHO we could make it a Holy Cross-friendly crowd pretty easily.
SHU defeated Manhattan by 10 (81-71) in their exhibition game.

Whether we "run" more or not, it's clear to me that the team speed is much improved and we will be able to get up and down the court faster if and when the opportunity presents itself - Green a tad slower than AT, but more controlled when he pushes it, while Faw, Grandison, and Butler as a`group are faster than the other departed seniors. A quick check of the official NCAA attendance figures . . . only South Carolina State averaged fewer fans per home game than SHU in D1 last season. fs.ncaa.org/Docs/stats/m_basketball_RB/Reports/attend/2017.pdf

OK, glad to have that confirmed. Now let's see if HC can get some fannies in the seats. For those not familiar with Sacred Heart's court, it looks like a large high school gym. The good part is that there are no bad seats. We have never had any issues with the ushers and simply look to sit with the group of folks who are all wearing Purple! GO CROSS GO!

Here is the SHU write-up for their exhibition at Manhattan...note they made their first 9 shots from the flor and held the Jaspers scoreless for the last 5:29 of the first half. Impressive.
RIVERDALE, N.Y. – The Sacred Heart men's basketball team had four players score in double figures Friday night in an 81-71 win over the Manhattan Jaspers in exhibition action at Draddy Gymnasium.
Sean Hoehn led the Pioneers with 19 points, adding six rebounds and five assists. Mario Matasovic was a perfect 8-for-8 from the field for 18 points. Freshman E.J. Anosike had 11 points off the bench and Kinnon LaRose had 10 points. Zach Radz had a game-high 10 rebounds off the bench and added eight points.
First Half - SHU made its first nine shots from the field. - A Matasovic layup with 15:22 remaining started a 9-0 run for the Pioneers. A Jaecee Martin steal and score capped the spurt, putting SHU ahead 16-10 with 11:05 left in the half. - Back-to-back threes by Hoehn and Matasovic sparked a 10-3 run that put SHU ahead by 11, 38-27, with 2:47 to go. Matasovic had the last seven points in the run. - SHU held Manhattan without a field goal for the final 5:29 of the half - The Pioneers shot 69% from the field in the half and assisted on 16 of 18 made baskets. The Jaspers shot just 28.6% from the field.
Second Half
- LaRose had the first five SHU points of the half, with his three at the 16:37 mark putting SHU up by 14 49-35. - Radz's three-pointer with 8:43 remaining capped 11-3 run over 2:58 that put the Pioneers up 65-49. Four different players scored in the run. - Manhattan got as close as four points late in the game, but six straight points from Radz and Anosike put SHU up by 10 75-65 with 2:07 to play.
Next Game The Pioneers open the 2017-18 season at the Pitt Center on Friday, November 10 at 6 p.m. against Holy Cross.
