Quincy mc Knight skeered of the Crusaders His loss to Seton Hall (still at "SHU") will be a big one. It bothers me how some power schools seem to see and treat other conferences as a feeder system. South Orange, N.J. - Quincy McKnight, a 6-3, 180-pound guard from Bridgeport, Conn., has signed a grant-in-aid offer to transfer to Seton Hall University and join the men’s basketball program, head coach Kevin Willard announced Monday. McKnight, who previously attended Sacred Heart University, will sit out the 2017-18 season per NCAA regulations, and he will have two years of eligibility remaining, beginning with 2018-19. “We’re very excited to welcome Quincy into the Seton Hall Basketball family,” Willard said. “He is a very talented basketball player with a great ability to score. During his sit-out year, he will continue to develop his game on both ends of the floor, and he will be instrumental in helping his teammates improve in practice.” McKnight had a breakout sophomore season at Sacred Heart, where he averaged 18.9 points, 4.9 rebounds and 3.0 assists and was named first-team All-NEC, first-team NABC All-District 18 and third-team All-Met Writers. He led the Pioneers in scoring, assists and steals (52), shot 43 percent from the field and 78 percent from the free throw line and averaged 32.5 minutes a game. Among his NEC peers, he finished second in the conference in scoring and fourth in steals. A three-time NEC Player of the Week as well as a USBWA and Met Writers Player of the Week, McKnight’s marquee performance of the season was a 44-point outburst in a three-overtime win over Bryant; he was 16-for-26 from the field, 4-for-6 from three-point range and 8-for-12 from the free throw line and also contributed nine rebounds, six assists and four steals. As a freshman in 2015-16, McKnight was an NEC All-Rookie and five-time NEC Rookie of the Week selection after averaging 11.4 points and 5.3 rebounds in 27 games. He was second on the Pioneers in scoring, assists and steals and was third in rebounding. In total, McKnight has tallied 914 career points in just two seasons and has career averages of 15.5 points, 5.1 rebounds and 2.8 assists. The addition of Quincy McKnight strengthens an already-loaded recruiting class for the Pirates, who also gain the services of guard Myles Cale (Middletown, Del.), forward Sandro Mamukelashvili (Tbilisi, Georgia), guard Jordan Walker (Port Washington, N.Y.), center Romaro Gill (St. Thomas, Jamaica) and forward Darnell Brodie (Newark, N.J.). The impressive class of newcomers joins an already potent Pirates squad that is an early consensus top-25 program. The Pirates, who have won 21 or more games and reached the NCAA Tournament in back-to-back seasons, return seven letterwinners that account for 90.5 percent of the team's scoring and 90.0 percent of the team's rebounding from 2016-17. ___________________________ PS: I, for one, am glad to see him move on. Last year McKnight had 8 points and 6 rebounds in only 25 minutes. He also turned the ball over 5 times and had 4 personal fouls - perhaps that was behind the limited minutes. You would think a 6'3" guard who can score would be out there longer.

I have been to several games at SHU. The HC fans are always considerably more vocal and almost as numerous as the SHU fans. The 92 entourage makes any crowd seem more vocal

Wonder if their best player Lopez played against Manhattan no mention of him in article and couldn't find a box score. In any event a real good effort by SHU as Manhattan was picked 2nd in preseason MAAC poll.

Word on the Ivy board is Princeton blew out Manhattan in a scrimmage. Maybe Manhattan is just coming out of the gate a little slow, maybe not. Always wary of putting too much stock in these early games/scrimmages - I just think the game Friday will be tough; it's almost never easy at their place.

I still remember watching RW the first time we played at SHU. The Sacred Heart told me how thrilled hey were to have HC come to their house for the first time. Then they drove us crazy with their defense and our inability to hold onto the ball and to score. I think RW turned a deeper shade of Purple that evening. IIRC, that was when my wife and I first met you, Dave.

I'd love to go Friday, but with the start time it's iffy. If I can't, i hope you and others show our frosh how well the HC faithful travels!

Many people will be celebrating Veterans Day on the Friday. The stock market is closed and investment houses will also be closed. Pubic sector employees who normally don't work Saturday will also be off. On the other hand, I don't know anyone outside of money and government that gets the day off. That might have something to do with the early start

from the game article on the shu site, they hit their first nine shots from the field, shot 69% fg in the first half and led wire to wire - game was at Manhattan. Let's hope they shoot a lot worse on their home floor.

In the interest of full disclosure, there are multiple reports that SHU got whupped by Iona in a secret scrimmage. The Gaels are the pre-season favorite to win the MAAC, with the Jaspers a close second in the voting.

Let's be sure to take these exhibitions and scrimmages with a grain of salt.
Providence lost to Carleton University (Canada) by ten points recently.
Lest we forget that HC lost to Bob Walsh and RIC in an exhibition before the 2007-08 season, and then went on to begin the season 7-1 before injuries derailed us.

I would really like to get to this game despite the house of horrors that has historically been the Bobby V Gymnasium or whatever it’s called. Unfortunately, the youth sports scheduling gods have not been kind on this one. Hoping something happens that makes it possible. 50/50 at the moment.

Preview from the Sacred Heart Site:
Holy Cross (0-0) at Sacred Heart (0-0)
Friday,Nov. 10 - 6 PM
Coach Bike Court at the Pitt Center - Fairfield, Conn.
Setting the Scene... Sacred Heart opens the 2017-18 season on its home floor for the first time since 2004 as it hosts Holy Cross.
Last Season... SHU posted its third consecutive double-digit wins season in 2016-17, going 13-19. The Pioneers were 8-10 in NEC play, qualifying for the NEC Tournament as the eighth seed. SHU drove top-seed and eventual champion Mount St. Mary's to the brink in the quarterfinals, falling 76-73.
All-Time vs. Holy Cross... The Crusaders lead the all-time series against the Pioneers 8-5. SHU won four of the first seven meetings, but since the 2011-12 season Holy Cross has won five of the last six editions. The Pioneers are 4-2 all-time against the Crusaders at the Pitt Center.
Last Meeting... SHU rallied from an eight-point deficit to tie Holy Cross 67-67 with 0:45 left in regulation, but the Crusaders scored the final five points for a 72-67 win at the Pitt Center on Dec. 21, 2016. Joseph Lopez led the Pioneers with 22 points and 10 rebounds, going 10-for-14 from the field. Sean Hoehn and Matej Buovac each added 10 points. Malachi Alexander had a game-high 38 points for the Crusaders, adding 10 rebounds. SHU shot below 30% from the three-point line in the game, while Holy Cross shot 37.5%.
Look Who's Back... The Pioneers return six of their top eight scorers from a year ago, and four of five starters. SHU returns 63.3% of its scoring from the 2016-17 campaign, led by Joseph Lopez's 13.2 points per game. Senior Charles Tucker Jr. led the team with 4.06 assists per game, with junior Sean Hoehn adding another 3.09 assists and eight points per game.
Lopez Tops On The Block… SHU returns one of the top frontcourts in the NEC this season, led by senior forward Joseph Lopez. A Third Team All-NEC selection in 2016-17, Lopez finished his first year as a Pioneer fourth in the NEC in blocks (1.23/game), fifth in rebounding (8.5/game), and sixth in field goal percentage (.565). Lopez had 11 double-doubles last season, with eight coming in conference play, and averaged 13.2 points per game. The senior forward was the only low-post player selected to the Preseason All-NEC Team.
Cha Cha Dimes… Senior point guard Charles Tucker Jr. was fourth in the NEC in assists last season, averaging 4.06 per game. Tucker had at least five assists in a game 12 times in 2016-17, including a stretch of seven straight games from Dec. 21 to Jan. 14. He was also fourth in the league in assist/turnover ratio at 1.43.
Hoehn Homed In From Three… Junior guard Sean Hoehn nearly doubled his scoring output last season as a sophomore. After averaging 4.8 points as a freshman, Hoehn averaged eight points a contest last season. Hoehn made 50 three-pointers in 2016-17, shooting 35.2% from the three-point arc. He also shot 82.9% from the free throw line.
Matasovic Off The Mat... Redshirt-Senior forward Mario Matasovic is primed to be a key contributor for the Pioneers this season. Despite averaging just 5.9 points per game last season, the Croatian forward shot almost 44% from the field and averaged 3.4 rebounds per game. Matasovic had four games in double-figures in 2016, scoring a season-high 19 points in a win over St. Francis Brooklyn on Feb. 9. He shot 70% from the field in that game and added eight rebounds and three steals.
Scouting Holy Cross… The Crusaders went 15-17 overall in 2016-17, finishing fifth in the Patriot League with a 9-9 conference record. Junior forward Karl Charles is the Crusaders' leading returning scorer, averaging 9.4 points and 3.7 assists per game last season. Holy Cross was picked to finish eighth in the Patriot League preseason poll.
