The Red Foxes have not beaten Holy Cross, with the series at 7-0 in favor of the Crusaders. In their season opener, Marist lost to Navy 7 at home (70-77) after Marist blew a 14 point lead. . Massey has Marist as a 6 point favorite.
Marist won the battle of the boards over Navy 42-36. That could spell big trouble for HC. Their front line of Gilmer, Fitzpatrick, and Duffel had 26 rebounds (one guard, Hand, had 6 offensive rebounds). They shot 42% from the floor (29% from 3 point range). They shot only45.8% on FTs. They had 14 turnovers to only 11 by Navy.
The Red Foxes led for most of the game until late, when Navy came back to tie and then to win in the second overtime. Marist s strong and is (and should be) a clear favorite. This will be a real test for the HC women.

From the Marist board: "Yes. Fair or not, Marist WBB fans are not into moral victories against the patriot league so this game is squarely on the back of upperclassmen Fitzpatrick and Clement. Time to show up and lead. Without a win for momentum heading out on the road against some top competition an 0-7 start isn't unthinkable."
"Put first game behind us and lets look to bounce back. Alana is out but still plenty of talent left to win this one."
"Sr Kendall Baab 6’2” F (MN)
The Good: The only senior on the roster, (Allie will now be a RS) Would not be surprised at all if she is one of the captains on this team, it would be well deserved. Every year her game has gotten just a little bit better including her defense and strength, she gave us very valuable minutes last year. She is one of the reasons the culture surrounding this team is where it is verse a few short years ago.
The Bad: Broke her hand earlier in summer (shooting hand), hopefully that will be fully healed for season. Her TO’s need to be cut down, hopefully she has continued to get stronger and more physical in the paint. Thoughts: Assuming fully healed I see her in a very similar role to last year. There is going to be a lot more depth at the forward/center position this year but having been in this system for 4 years gives her an advantage. Her mentoring the young kids will be invaluable. "

Very interesting that soph guards Smith and Morris have replaced srs. Doherty and Byrne in the starting lineup so far this season. Looks like those younger ladies stepped up their games in the off-season (although the seniors will get plenty of minutes)

Marist by 6 (39-33) at the half after a 12 point run by the Red Foxes. HC threw up a few bricks from 3 point range.

85-74 loss. Manis with 22 pts 13 reb, TH-Waheed with 25 pts. third option on offense might be the frosh Faulkner who had 12 pts tonight the soph guards, Smith and Morris who started both went scoreless. Maybe Doherty and Byrne will be back as starters vs. Rider

It appears that once again, HC will live or die by the 3. HC shot about 20% (to 44% by Marist) from 3 point range - with some open shots falling far short or clearly off line. That was the big difference that cost HC the game.

We had no answer for the Marist zone, other than to fire away with the 3 ball, which we're not very good at, at least last night. My first look at the women in a while, we have obviously two star players, but no one else stood out last night. Surprised Gibbons came out in zone after the half, after down 6, down 7 after 3Q. We pressed late in the 4th and it worked. Perhaps needed to do that much sooner to get back in the game. Out two top scorers were very good

having 4 players under 6' on the floor for the whole game is tough unless we're shooting over 50 pct. anyone know when we will see Haseneuar, Swords and Murphy ?

Even with the height difference, HC was only out-rebounded by 5 bounds (36-41 - tied 12-12 in off reb). They held their own through most of the game.

rgs, you should know better than to take a one or two game snapshot. please look at last season with basically the same players and with similar injury problems to our bigs, other than Manis. We were outrebounded 41 to 36 per game. over the course of a season that is a big problem.
you also know that our fg shooting % was lousy last season. over the course of the 30 games our team fg% was .351 vs. opponents .400.
we need to see big a improvement in both this season or there will be similar results.

I would expect to see them filter back in within weeks. All warm up before games and have varied levels of activity allowed in practice. I think it is accurate to say all are healed and awaiting medical clearance (strength evaluation) to go full contact.

I thought the best two players on the floor last night were Manis and IT-W. Fun to watch. With a little more production from the supporting cast this team could be pretty good

Having 5 fewer rebounds only becomes a real problem when you are not hitting a decent percentage of shots - as happened at Marist with 20% from 3 point range.. A stat snapshot is all you get at this time of year. It is clearly not as accurate in making judgements as it might be at the end of the season. I believe that most folks are able to take that into account. And, unless I am mistaken, last year does not tell as much as you might believe - it was a different season after all. Injured players, out for part of last season, have returned and there are now new injuries.

Eye witness account, I thought rebounding was a big issue last night. Marist overall much bigger than us. And other than the two mentioned above, we struggled
