It will be interesting to see how the URI coaches and staff approach the Holy Cross game. It will be their first game since the EC Mathews injury out at Nevada. Rhody has not handled adversity well in recent years taking some time to move on. Their worst losses last year were to bottom tier A-10 teams (LaSalle and Fordham) in blowouts at home at the Ryan Center. A team that was later to win A-10 tournament and win an NCAA game (Creighton) by double digits before falling at the end to an eventual Final-4 Oregon team had no business losing home games to those teams let alone by big margins. Both these games however came right after last second losses to Dayton. It would seem that the there was a lingering after effect which carried over. Two years ago when EC Matthews went down in game 1 versus American, the entire program was crestfallen. Players and coaches words and body language exhibited a sense of great lament for what could have been as a big breakout season had been expected. Coach Hurley is an extremely passionate coach that wears his emotion. Look to see if he has learned from the past and matured and watch how his players feed off him. It might have been better for the Crusaders had the game been played earlier as the six day layoff might give Rhody enough time to put the injury behind them.

PROBABLE URI STARTERS AND TOP SUBS: 32 Jared Terell G (Senior, 6'3", 215) 15 pt / 4 reb / 3 asst / 30 min per game 13 Sanford Robinson G (Senior, 6'4", 200) 11 pt / 3 reb / 2 asst / 23 min per game 11 Jeff Dowtin G (Soph, 6'3", 170) 8 pt / 3 reb / 5 asst / 30 min per game 01 Jarvis Garrett G (Senior, 6'0", 175) 6 pt / 2 reb/ 2 asst / 22 min 10 Cyril Langevine F (Soph, 6'8" 225) 4 pt / 3 reb / 1 asst / 17 min 34 Andre Berry F (Senior, 6'8" 275) 11 pt / 3 reb / 2 ast / 17 min 45 Nicola Akele F (Junior, 6' 8" 215) 4 pt / 4 eb / 0 asst / 16 min
Experienced team, big guards with some big bodies up front. Guard E C Matthews a likely scratch with injured wrist. They out-rebounded Nevada (an 88-81 loss) 34-32...but they had an 18-6 edge in offensive rebounds. The Rams has 28 personals to only 17 by Nevada.

Massey has Rhode Island as an 18 point favorite (70-52). He gives the Rams a 93% chance for the win. How close will HC come? The next opponent for URI is Seton Hall. Maybe they will be looking past the Crusaders.

Sounds like the coach is perhaps trying to prevent a letdown/look ahead from the student section ...

I was on the fence but now think we may have to go to offset any impact of Hurley’s email to the students.

This may have been covered already but do we know why this game is on an NFL Sunday at 1:00? The Pats are a 4:25 start but still seems like a worse option than a Saturday.

By all mean the team should see what this fool has to say. Yes, URI is clearly more talented, at this point. But the dunk he shows does not end anyone’s life...not even close. An upset here would be amazing. So they schedule HC because we come cheap...it would be really nice to see them pay more than they planned.

This Runnin Rhody clown is really full of himself.
"I had an intriguing discussion with Colby Roussel on May 1, 2017 about Rhody MBB's non-conference schedule. (We are all awaiting Roussel's return to the blog and he better have a bunch of articles ready.) After talking about the good job that Dan Hurley has done with scheduling the likes of Alabama, Iona, and Florida Gulf Coast, we talked about the games that will likely be boring. The first team that came to both of our minds is Holy Cross. I understand that Holy Cross is a cheap option for any D1 college basketball team to purchase for a buy game or to agree on a home-and-home series with. With that said, the Crusaders and watching them play against URI for the past two seasons has never peaked [sic] my interest in the slightest bit. I think the criticism that I am giving in this article is better than the first and only other time I mentioned them in a Runnin Rhody article. In their matchup on December 2, 2015 in the Ryan Center, URI trounced Holy Cross 74-56, even without the services of E.C. Matthews and with Kuran Iverson re-acclimating himself to Division 1 basketball. How can you tell that this game was a blowout even if you were not in attendance (I was in the front row)? Walk-ons Shane Plunkett and Rory Temkin were able to fit in playing time for URI. Last season, in a game in which Matthews played just 18 minutes due to an injury and scored 0 points, Rhode Island rolled again. With a minimal attendance of 3,537 and the game being broadcasted on MyRITV, URI never trailed after going down 8-3 with 16:42 remaining in the first half. Eventually the Rams won 65-54, with relative ease. As much as I hate to see Hurley's squad matching up against an extremely porous Holy Cross team, I tried to find the positives of this matchup. Evidently, the perks of these two teams playing is few and far in between. Before a miracle run and A LOT of luck in their conference tournament in the 2015-2016 season, they won the Patriot League's automatic bid into the NCAA tournament. In the first real game of the tournament, they were blown out by number one seeded Oregon, 91-52. Before this miracle berth into the Big Dance, they had not been in the NCAA tournament since the 2006-2007 season. Holy Cross can do almost nothing but damage Rhode Island's resume. When Rhode Island beats Holy Cross, their computer numbers will still likely take a hit. In a disaster where Holy Cross would upset Rhode Island, the Rams would have an unfixable error on their NCAA tournament resume. Finally, let's never forget when Kuran Iverson nearly ended a Crusaders' player's life in their matchup on Wednesday, December 2, 2015. Kuran Iverson dunked on this kid so bad that there is a YouTube video of the dunk, as well as several gargantuan photos of the dunk. "

Here's something the HC players should see: This guy is an embarrassment to URI fans. Let’s review some of the key points from his blog post: 1. “With that said, the Crusaders and watching them play against URI for the past two seasons has never peaked my interest in the slightest bit.“ It’s “piqued”. 2. “How can you tell that this game was a blowout even if you were not in attendance (I was in the front row)? Walk-ons Shane Plunkett and Rory Temkin were able to fit in playing time for URI.“ Wow. #analysis Thank God we had a front row witness to tell us that the walk-ons playing means the game was comfortably in hand at the end in case the 18-point margin of victory didn’t give it away. This guy thinks he’s Spike Lee because he sat in the front row during a URI-HC game. He also mentioned his front row status in a tweet during the game so he was REALLY impressed with himself. Must be fighting off the ladies with that kind of access at the Ryan Center. 3. “URI never trailed after going down 8-3 with 16:42 remaining in the first half.” They must have been playing with some sort of fancy Globetrotter rules to get 5 points in one play given that they never trailed after going down 8-3. With regular rules, they probably would have trailed at least 8-5 or 8-6 after the next possession. Turns out the box score says we did have an 8-6 lead after the 8-3 lead. 4. “Evidently, the perks of these two teams playing is few and far in between.“ If being a Rhody Superfan doesn’t work out, he’ll probably be able to get a spot writing for the N.Y. Times. 5. “Before a miracle run and A LOT of luck in their conference tournament in the 2015-2016 season, they won the Patriot League's automatic bid into the NCAA tournament.“ Didn’t realize we were granted the auto bid before all of that luck in the conference tourney. That Lehigh game would have been a lot less stressful had I known we had already been granted the bid. 6. “Before this miracle berth into the Big Dance, they had not been in the NCAA tournament since the 2006-2007 season.” Umm . . . URI has been to the NCAA tourney once since the 1998-99 season. We have been five times since the 1998-99 season. So, maybe come down off the high horse. You have a good team. Hurley is doing a good job. You’re not Duke. 7. “Finally, let's never forget when Kuran Iverson nearly ended a Crusaders' player's life in their matchup on Wednesday, December 2, 2015. Kuran Iverson dunked on this kid so bad that there is a YouTube video of the dunk.” After first I thought this was way overstating the case for what I thought was a pretty routine dunk. But then I kept reading and realized there’s a YouTube video of it!!! Holy cow! That is so amazing! If it’s on YouTube, it must be wicked awesome. Because, you know, there is a very high bar before a video can get on YouTube. It’s pretty much like getting on the SCTop10.
