A loss to Fairleigh Dickinson. How low can this program go, eh what!?!
I'll be frank. I care only about HC football and men's basketball. I sent a note yesterday bemoaning the fact that it's not possible to contribute to the men's basketball program without also contributing to the women's program. Some reacted negatively. Whatever.
But there is a much bigger problem. Today, I pulled up an October letter from Nate Pine to financial contributors to HC sports...I assume you all got it too...that deserves some attention. He starts by praising the overall GPA record of HC athletes and mentions in passing such success as HC teams enjoyed in the last year. Then there is this: ""Countless student-athletes collected individual accolades for their academic achievements, their athletic efforts and their community service. Our student-athletes" scholarly pursuits, experiential learning opportunities and, and contributions to the Worcester-area community and beyond are a reflection of our commitment to the College's mission and core values."
Pine went on: ""While our growth over the past four years is evident in these areas and so many more, it is our culture and revitalized team mentality that has catapulted Holy Cross into a new era of Crusader Athletics."
I have no idea what that last quote means, but nowhere in this letter from the Director of Athletics is there any indication that WINNING THE GAMES is an important goal of athletics on Mt. St. James these days.
From which I can only conclude that winning is no longer important. So, for those who believe...like me...that winning is important and, really, the only reason to spend millions on our marquee sports, take note.

Are you referring to the “Annual Report” on HC athletics? That whole report (including a graphic that claimed a 80% increase in attendance) was insulting.

I thought I could only start these types of threads NP is basically scrambling right now...he knows there is very little on the fields, courts etc he can tout so he focused the letter on the off the field, court etc successes of our student-athletes.

I come to this thread neither to praise nor disparage NP....much of this was/is beyond his control as AD.
Most of our athletic problems (particularly with football and hoop) are traced back to decisions made 30, 40 years ago...not joining the Big East and then subsequently joining the Colonial League....far beyond what Pine can fix at this point.
It is starting to grate though when Pine sends out these "all is well" reports etc.

Are they doing those rediculous scholar badges on their uniforms this year! I hope not, they were foolish! Sports teams at this level need to win and complete on the floor. “Hey we just lost to FDU , but we had more academic badges” what is this the Boy Scouts? You can’t have it both ways. The admin has to decide either to be a legitimate D1 college, or just go intramural so everyone get a participation trophy. ADNP, it time to show wins and progress or stop masking that we are improving and moving up!

So let me get this straight: youngest hoop team HC has fielded in decades loses to another low-level D1 school, early in the season, on the road, and it's "The Death of HC Athletics"? Have another. Where were you last Thursday nite?

I was thinking this would be the one year where people wouldn't be freaking out in the month of November, but I guess I was wrong. We shouldn't have been making March travel plans after the Harvard game, and we shouldn't be throwing in the towel after this one. I could see these guys winning just about any game left on the schedule; I could see us losing just about every one as well. That's how it is when almost 50% of your roster are freshmen. I think the football hire is a much more worthy issue of stress at this point in time, imho. Happy Thanksgiving!

Where were you last Thursday nite? For the uninformed, FDU is considered a program on the rise. Coach Herenda is thought to be developing a good program and his recruiting has brought in some talented players. Yes, HC should not have lost this game. For the second time, I saw our players appear to be "lost" for a few minutes late in the second half. That was a major factor in the final outcome. I have confidence that our coaches will work on and "fix" this. HC athletics is hardly "dead." I am going to Belfast to watch some HC basketball, not an Irish wake.

As bad as this loss was, it's not as bad as the D-III loss to Williams back in 2004. The program survived well enough to go to the NIT the following year
