Very puzzling. I think he has very high potential--maybe having a hard time with O or D schemes?

Very puzzling. I think he has very high potential--maybe having a hard time with O or D schemes? Having only been able to attend one game live so far this year (Albany) and catch a mere half of another via streaming (SHU), even I am surprised about the disappearance of Butler's PT. Actually was impressed with him in the 13 min he played against Albany. Seems to me like he can do a lot of things at least moderately well on O but needs to learn the nuances of our defensive schemes.

Everything is awesome! Future is bright! (Did I do that right?)
Don’t know what’s more depressing: the state of the program or how few people care.
If this season continues on the current trajectory, change will be needed.

We were at the game... along with several other Crossports posters... First half was decent. led most of the way, think we were down by 3 at the half... very winnable game... Second half... didn't make a filed goal for almost 8 minutes, only a few free throws... The made a couple, then almost 6 minutes without a field goal... YOU CANNOT HAVE SUCH LONG DROUGHTS AND STILL EXPECT TO WIN! Difference in the game... UMASS made 20 of 22 FT'S while we made 9 of 11 and UMASS made many more 3's than we did... GAME OVAH! We struggled at times when UMASS went ZONE... kept passing and dribbling around the perimeter too much! On a side note.... Who is the young man sitting at the end of the bench, dressed in a white short and tie who shook hands with all players who came out of the game? Have not seen him before at previous games... Definitely not a manager and not a recruit (don't believe they can sit on the bench during a game). He seems about 6' 3'' .... Possible walk on ?

The Mullins Center didn’t seem to have too many more spectators tonight than a good night at the Hart Center, but way more personnel, concessions, security, etc. Christopher Morgan ‘16 was a front row spectator. The kid that HCFC45 referenced did look familiar, but can’t remember from where. The court lights were very annoying as I was wishing I had a baseball cap on to shade my eyes. JF and JG had pretty nice games. CN had way more than 3 rebounds. I hope CG’s injury isn’t too serious. We can’t continue with all these shot clock violations.

If team loses 20-25 games, is it players or coach? Would be three losing seasons in a row under CBC. Not exactly progress!

Attendance of 2,395 last night was near the norm this season thus far for UMass. They are averaging 2,602 through their first four OOC games. They typically have slightly larger crowds for their league games. Their full season average was 3,297 for last year. The Calipari days of big crowds in the 9,493 seat venue are long gone.

The team that HC had playing up to the last two minutes of the first half is the one I want to see more often. Then we went about 10 minutes straight (end of the first and into the second half) without a basket. No team - even one with a good defense - can win like that.
Also, has anyone heard anything about Butler (injury, illness,?) and his not seeing any court time?

The wannabe TSA agents at the arena a real joke. Made me walk through their "detector" several times with a beeper connected to it. Of course it kept beeping. Did you touch the sides? Umm, no! Then they pat me down with a body search, really... Ireland was much easier.

I guess they think the NCAA vacating those wins to be fake news.

The "threat of terrorism" now almost universally used as a scapegoat to catch as many fans as possible sneaking in outside water bottles and M&Ms into arenas and ballparks.

AB either hurt, getting a mental health break or has just fallen on the depth chart behind MZ and CLS. Hopefully if the third option is true it's only temporary. Think UNH is huge game from a confidence standpoint team seems to be backtracking of late. Need minimum of 25 points a game from Charles and Benzan to be successful. Freshmen are going to be up and down from game to game but need consistent effort from juniors. Floyd has been a very pleasant surprise and until yesterday Benzan has been good, Charles for whatever the reason has not been getting it done and MZ has been up and down.

i've been away from the board for a variety of reasons, but i will now take my lumps from bbc, hc70/ncaam/possum/whatever other names he's using at the moment and anyone else who has doubled-down on carmody and nate pine's failure. it has been a disappointing start to the season and there will be no argument from me in that regard.
i haven't watched a game since fairleigh dickinson (which was an awful performance), but i am still unquestionably "long" on carmody and the program. i expected a poor ooc, although i had hoped we would have beaten fairleigh dickinson and won at least one game in ireland.
but really, we're not that far off from what most expected in the ooc as far as wins and losses. i don't think carmody forgot how to coach. he was, judging by wins and losses and long tenure in the big 10, arguably the most successful incoming coach to hc. that includes ralph willard, who was still my favorite college basketball coach at hc (past or present) who struggled at pitt and did not survive nearly as long. i loved willard because i'm a defense guy personally, although i've been around the game long enough to know there is more than one way to skin a cat. and as much as it pains me to say it, ralph willard could never get us over the hump of winning an ncaa tournament game as several pl teams have now done. the teams were simply too offensively challenged and could never get the big bucket we needed in any of those games. to quote my bud ryan serravale, these losses felt like getting our hearts ripped out/"oot" (to quote accent) and i didn't get the sense that was going to change. and of course, he left us before we could find out. i don't hold it against him, i'm forever grateful for his rejuvenation of the program and the great memories of our success during his leadership.
in any event, those of us who believe in carmody's leadership and recognize that a program that was without an identity for two consecutive coaching staffs and has experienced a complete roster refresh knew that this year would be a struggle, especially early on. nothing that i've seen has changed, although i do have some concerns.
what's most concerning to me are the following:
- the collapse in the second half of games. chalk it up to a young team to a degree, but carmody needs to come up with some kind of plan (different rotations? different defensive schemes? ) to prevent this from becoming a chronic problem. this one is on carmody, in my opinion.
- karl charles' health. we simply need more consistent play from kc to compete. if he is injured, that's a good sign. if this is his game, that's very concerning. i have a sense he is not at 100%. we will be a better team with karl at full health.
- the interior defense and defensive rebounding has been horrible. carmody does not value offensive rebounding, so his rebounding rankings even on good teams against great competition in the big 10 were never very good. but we need to rebound better defensively and defend the interior better.
that said, i love what i've seen out of caleb green (consistently) and the other freshmen (not as consistently). we've played very well at times, which gives a glimpse of how this team might look when we're more experienced and physically developed.
the naysayers will view every game as the way it will always be. the question is, will they have the stones to admit they were wrong if carmody turns it around and the team is stronger by the end of this season and wins the pl next year as many of us hope? we'll see.
while i will always call out hypocrisy (read: the ridiculous double-standard from hc70 [and his aliases] with respect to his litany of excuses from milan brown and obsession with him to this day), i won't crucify those who just don't think carmody will get it done the way i and others were crucified by the "hater hunters" for criticizing milan brown's leadership... which was obviously justified criticism as the only person whose opinion matters took action and brought in a guy that had been successful. bbc and his previous iterations were at least consistent in that he didn't like milan brown or carmody.
mea culpa isn't big around crossports, but if there is no improvement of any sort by the end of this year and we're still struggling next year when i feel we should be the league favorites, i'll be the first to admit i was wrong about carmody.
