Mary a one although Butler has potential. I'll always remember our play by play guy on WTAG Radio, Bob Gamere, referring to Keith as a bull in china shop.

AB is pretty aggressive and fearless, from what I have observed. I don't think we'll see him backing down from anyone or any situation.

We desperately need a shift in recruiting philosophy to re-focus on defense, toughness, and building a roster of complementary pieces.
Just throwing scholarship offers at anyone who looks like they can shoot is just digging us a deeper and deeper hole.

.......the balls to the wall attitude of a Hochstein, Vicens, Curry? we should not let the disappointing cloud of the season so far (especially last night's pathetic performance) obfuscate the fact that austin butler appears to be as tough as any holy cross player i have known personally or seen in my 25 years or so of following holy cross basketball. and he's a freshman. butler is the only player on the roster who consistently boxes out, gets his body on an opponent, hits the floor with regularity, seeks to draw physical contact (benzan also does this to a lesser degree), and demonstrates the "balls to the wall" attitude to which nht refers. he reminds me of rj evans, who was as physically tough of a 6'3 player that you'll find anywhere, but with a more fiery demeanor. toughness is always fostered when you're 6'3 or so (i don't think butler is 6'5), a rock solid 200+ lbs, and were a star football player in high school. i can't wait to watch butler develop physically and in his game over the next few years.

By the way-- if we are comparing today's players to prior greats (in this area) Hochstein, Vicens (saw him play dozens of games), and Curry I feel we should add Andrew Keister to the gold standard squad.

Another guy who I think was very tough in a quiet kind of way, was Jave Meade.

i would also add ryan serravale to the list. his toughness is often overlooked because he played on such a tough team overall with curry and a bunch of other physical players (big pat whearty, sankes, szatko) but he was really, really tough both physically (good size, strength, and physicality for a point guard) and emotionally (UNBELIEVABLY competitive). curry posts here once in a while and i know he would back me up on serravale's toughness!
p.s. - i was actually reminded of serravale when watching another ryan from northfield mount hermon (greer) that we are recruiting.

Fondly remember Ryan S. on the floor, with a big fist pump, after drilling a 3 and getting fouled early in the Kansas NCAA game.

Only two players close to the other three — Brian Reale and Stan Grayson. JErving called Stan the toughest defender he faced in college, and I would argue Brian should have been included on the initial list. The others are interesting but there is not the same mental and physical toughness demonstrated by those nhteamer established as the standard.

Butler is no joke. Really like him. He posted a photo from the Hart Center at 3:00 this morning.

He only had a few years at HC (transferred from Fordham), but don't forget Joe Carballiera '75.
