A 31.6% 3FG shooter taking a 3 when we are down 2 isn’t exactly an ideal look when we have a guy who hasn’t missed a FG in a month (Floyd), another with 16 tonight (Charles), and another who has had ice water in his veins the last week and a half (Grandison).

Stupid foul by Karnik keeps HC alive. Not impressed by him at all.

I hear you, but a wide open shot from top of key, when for much of the half we couldn't even get a shot off in our half court sets, has to be taken.

The 1-3-1 is a really nice wrinkle to throw at teams once in awhile. This match-up is for the birds.

10 Lehigh fouls to 2 for HC 16.5 minutes into the second half. Will there be letters from Crusader Nation to Reggie Greenwood? And a 50/50 call also going HC’s way after replay to takes points off the scoreboard? Oh my! Dr Brett Reed is truly one of a kind. What a collapse. A little insurance policy for you there. Just in case HC had come back to win you wanted to be on record saying it was due to Reid’s bad coaching, not due to good coaching or play by Holy Cross.

We had plenty of time to work the ball. Problem is when first guy open thinks he needs to shoot it.

Any team that moves the ball quickly and reverses hard against the match-up kills it. Let's go all-Thoreau and "simplify, simplify."

Jehyve went 7-7 tonight, and has converted 16 straight from the field, 25 of last 28. Now shooting 68% for the year, he's ranked 5th nationally.
We know this - the question is, does the rest of the team/staff know this.

I don’t think anyone who thinks that Carmody has done a sub-par job needs any type of insurance policy. The comeback was nice, but we have seemed to always be good at playing better when the opposing team takes their foot off the gas with a huge lead - not a good trait to have.

We shot 17-24 2PT FG tonight, yet attempted more 3PT than 2PT. That seems unwise.
Green really struggled tonight in all areas. A halfway decent game from him, and we likely win.
I think he will be a nice PG long term for us, but he's lost his shot in PL play (9-41 3PT).

We know this - the question is, does the rest of the team/staff know this. In the second half, Lehigh played almost exclusively zone to prevent JF from getting the ball in low post. When he did get it, he was doubled or at least once triple teamed. To his credit he often made the correct pass out of the double. We could find no consistent 3 point shooter, no matter how open they were. The atrocious turnovers prevented us from getting enough shooting opportunities

We shot 17-24 2PT FG tonight, yet attempted more 3PT than 2PT. That seems unwise. When Lehigh packs in their 2-3 zone around Jehyve and dares all of our perimeter players to shoot wide open 3s, there is little else we can do. And unlike Lafayette, Lehigh also made it difficult to enter the ball to the high post.

Austin Butler managed to post up four times against the zone. From what I saw, there seemed to be multiple gaps down low - but as we have done all year, if we get it to Jehyve on the blocks and he kicks it out (which he does very well), we never try to go back to him later in the possession.
We had plenty of time on the last possession to try to work it down. But if the guys are being told to take any open shot just because it's open, that's a problem - not all shooters are created equal, and selection is a virtue.

With a that kind of disparity, it could not have been inconsistent officiating. HC must have been driving to the hoop and pounding it to Floyd the entire second half not relying on outside shooting as much as they have been. Oh wait ...

“We called a timeout and said, ‘Let’s go 1-3-1,’ ” Carmody said, “and that’s what ignited us. We got some deflections and scored off our defense, got some easy ones. (Lehigh) was too fast for us and sometimes that 1-3-1 makes you more flat-footed, helps you neutralize speed. We probably should have done it sooner.”
The last sentence is as close as this coach will come to accepting responsibility post game.

Well, Jehyve’s monster block was #4 on the Sportscenter Top Ten this morning if that makes anyone feel better. I know this because the kids came flying into my bedroom to wake me from a deep sleep to tell me.

Jehyve played a great game. However, I lost count pretty early on of the number of times he was leaving the paint defensively, sprinting out to the arc to contest a shot or to run-and-jump a ball-handler - a strategy that was largely ineffective.
When your scheme calls for the best rim-protector in the conference to spend an inordinate amount of time and energy on the perimeter, it's time to re-think your scheme. As SoV suggested on another thread, it would be encouraging to see somebody on the staff next year who could complement, rather than replicate, the head coach's defensive approach.
