“We called a timeout and said, ‘Let’s go 1-3-1,’ ” Carmody said, “and that’s what ignited us. We got some deflections and scored off our defense, got some easy ones. (Lehigh) was too fast for us and sometimes that 1-3-1 makes you more flat-footed, helps you neutralize speed. We probably should have done it sooner.” The last sentence is as close as this coach will come to accepting responsibility post game. Lehigh was “too fast for us.” Unbelievable. Perhaps if the defense actually made sense and didn’t have people running all over the place with rotations that don’t make sense, the guys might actually be able to play it more effectively. Not sure how anyone can expect Carmody to take the program to the next level if we’re losing to 8-13 Lehigh because they’re “too fast.”

Far be it for me to critique the coaches on defense BUT one thing that annoys me is our guys running at corner shooters and going by them so far they are out of play for several seconds.

Disappointing loss, no way to sugarcoat it. Cohen and Ross played very well for LU, can't overlook that fact! The boys went into a funk the beginning of the second half which lasted ten minutes. It's happened in more games than not, when they just seem to lose focus and play themselves out of a victory. Certainly, they didn't quit! We have young guys who need to find that killer instinct and keep it for forty minutes.

Really bad loss especially with Tejada out. BC shortened use of bench last night with five starters playing 30+ minutes wonder if it's a one time thing or sign of things to come. CG had a very sub par game last night we have a real hard time when he doesn't play well. Loss of Benzan hurt last night, had to stick with CG despite his struggles as Lehigh pressure gave us a lot of trouble. It would be nice if the coach didn't wait till we're down 19 with 7 minutes to change a defense that he says was obviously not working. On a positive note JF has developed into a real force inside both offensively and defensively. If there wa a most improved player in the nation award he would certainly be a strong candidate. He's far exceeded my most optimistic expectations for him. The bad news if I had known he was going to be this good I would have thought we would have been better as a team overall.

I watched the game on TV last night, so it was my first watching of a game live rather than reading through the posts on this board. My observations:
- Our offense is probably the most boring variety of basketball one could produce. We pass the ball around the perimeter, four-high, and just needlessly waste the shot clock. We do not probe at the defense. We do not challenge the defense. You could CGI the defense out of the picture and we'd just pass around them. And we do it SLOWLY. Many times, a player at the top of the key will dribble in place, or move a step or two, before making the pass. This is more elementary than basketball 101. You don't take air out of the ball when you could do the same action sans dribbling. For comparison, Lehigh moved the ball around the key VERY quickly. Their dribbles were reserved for attacking a player and getting them to move before passing. Our dribbles were towards teammates and then we passed them the ball. Worse than high school.
- We did attempt to go inside to Floyd but later in the game he was double-teamed almost immediately. He passed out admirably and accurately. Guys got good looks off of those sets. We bricked a LOT of outside shots. 'hoops already summarized this aspect of the game.
- There was one instance in the first half, and two instances during the second half of this 3 PT brick-a-thon where players adjusted. 1) Butler in the high post, gets the ball, two dribble-backs-down his opponent for a layup. 2) Butler off the dribble attacks the hoop for a layup. 3) Charles attacks the hoop for a layup and-one. Makes the FT.
WHY DO WE KEEP HOISTING UP 26 FOOT SHOTS WITH PLAYERS WHO I WOULDN'T CHOOSE IN A PICKUP BASKETBALL GAME?
It is maddening. Oh, attacking the hoop off the dribble, or beating a zone inside out with Floyd/Butler in the high post is successful? Let's stop doing that and keep chucking bricks. THIS IS ULTIMATELY A COACHING BOTCH JOB.
- Our defense was okay yesterday. We leave our feet a LOT. Head fakes kill us... I get that Floyd is a shot blocker, and I won't pick on him since he had like six last night. But other players have to stay on their feet. This isn't CYO girls basketball. You can defend a shot without wildly hopping up in the air on a shooter. Our rotations were okay to weak at times. I thought we rebounded very well defensively. The 1-3-1 completely flummoxed Lehigh and really started to make the game look ugly on both sides with weak turnover followed by bricked 3PT shot followed by weak turnover. Eventually, we got hot and scored on 2 point FGs (the HORROR!) off of turnovers and got back in the game.
Nice to see Charles aggressive at times, but still looks in a slight funk. Floyd looks to put his mark on the game, enjoyable to watch. Impact player. Butler plays like he is allergic to losing. Tough SOB. Grandison has a touch of clutch. Nothing else really individually notable from my couch.

Did anybody else notice how well prepared HC was in the end game situation? HC subbed 2 players, when Lehigh was shooting a free throw, and Grandi went to the bench area..However, he was still in the game, and stayed on the court..He got a sip of water while standing in the corner of the court...Perfect place to hide...Austin took the made free throw, stepped out of bounds, and fired a strike to Grandi who was uncovered, and he made the three....Well coached and well run by the freshmen!
The officials screwed up on the shot clock violation on that crazy baseline heave..For a look at the replay, the call must come immediately, before the shot clock restarts..The refs let the ball come to half court before stopping play..I spoke with the ref rating the game, and he said yup. they screwed up on that...once the shot clock re-started, too late to review it,,,,

It was a cool play... but which would you rather have: a collection of cool plays and a loss on your home court to a sub .500 team? Or a collection of vanilla plays and a win on your home court against a sub .500 team?
We showed mostly the worst of both worlds: vanilla play and a loss.
It's great to see the positive aspects of the game, players, team, program etc. But after a while, we can't be pleased with some "good" things that are constantly coupled with losses on the fields/court/ice. I couldn't point my professor to 5 perfectly-answered questions on my exam, but an overall grade of 70-something , and ask to go on the dean's list. You have to produce results. We expect, even flaunt such things in the classroom (those PL commercials, the athletics Twitter putting up GPA numbers, mortar cap patches on our uniforms), but are starkly hypocritical when it comes to athletics performance. Isn't one of the Jesuit mantras to seek "magis"-- more, greater... and not be complacent with less than the best we can do?

Yeah, but . . . . that's a religious, Jesuit word: How about using the more secular word used in the New York State motto: Excelsior, a Latin word often translated as "ever upward" or "still higher." In total agreement with your thought. Whichever word is used, Holy Cross should not be complacent with just competing. Too much like cow-towing to "participation trophy" mentality. Certainly one comes out of Holy Cross not looking to be mediocre in a chosen career or profession but to excel.

I'd hate to be driving behind your tow-truck. I believe the work you were looking for is "kowtowing"

No. I was thinking of my Irish grandfather towing cows to market.
You mean there is another similar word? 😂
P.S. the common thread is the involvement of the Brits. The cows my grandfather towed (herded, actually) were owned by the British Gentry.

Fair game to knock the coach for what you perceive as competence/incompetence....but anyone in his line of work should not be included in any "Participation Trophy" rant. That should be reserved for the folks at HC who are calling the shots.

The practice was imposed by the Manchus on the Chinese - along with the obligation to wear one's hair in a long, narrow braid. The Brits refused to kowtow when they first arrived are were taken to meet high officials. The Court build very low doors that could only be entered after removing your hat and then bending over to enter almost on hands and knees. The Manchu rulers allowed this to count as a Kowtow.
