I've fallen behind reading my Holy Cross Magazines, so maybe this is in there but I just received a letter from my high school alma mater saying: Didn't know we did this.

I believe this scholarship has been in place for many years--since we got the (Taylor & Boody name comes to mind) organ in the Brooks music center???
Don't we also have one full merit scholarship for a classics major?

Don't we also have one full merit scholarship for a classics major? HC awarded about $2.6 million in academic merit scholarships this year. There is no breakout by full or partial. You'd divide the total by four to get the approximate amount for a class year. There is a separate breakout for academic merit awarded by external sources, e.g., National Merits. I do not know how ROTC awards are classified.

KY, I do vaguely recall a student getting some scholarship related to the organ [perhaps the school wanted someone who could actually play the thing?] that was, what, the largest organ of its kind in the country or some such. But I am still holding my breath for when Holy Cross will match " The Ohio State University" and give out golf caddy full scholarships. It's true!

The Classics Department has two different full tuition (presumably that means not covering room and board) scholarships. The Bean Scholarship is for two students per year. The Fitzgerald Scholarship is one student every four years. That gives us a total of 9. www.holycross.edu/academics/programs/classics/full-tuition-scholarships. The Music Department has two scholarships. The Brooks Scholarship appears to be offered each year and the Organ Scholarship less frequently. If there is only one student on campus per year on the Organ Scholarship, we have 5 per year for musicians. www.holycross.edu/academics/programs/music/music-scholarshipsThe Ellis Scholarship is an annual full tuition merit scholarship so that would give us four more. www.holycross.edu/how-aid-works/scholarships-grants/ellisThis puts 17 kids on campus with full tuition ($50,000 per year) for a total of $850,000. I suspect that there are a lot of little funds in the endowment aimed at various departments that represent the rest, but that is just a guess.

The organ scholarship has been in place for more than a decade. I believe it overlaps so that the freshman scholar can learn from the senior scholar, but I could be wrong about that part.

Organ scholar is indeed tied to the Taylor & Booty organ as I beleive it was endowed as part of the organ purchase.
The scholarship may not have been offered the year the organ was installed (1984), but it was definitely available within a year or 2. At the outset it was 1 student every 4 years but I believe it has been offered a bit more frequently - maybe one every 2 or 3 years the past decade or so.

Sader, the University of Illinois gives full caddie scholarships, Chick Evans Scholarships, and they have their own house/dorm. My kids pointed this out to me when they attended U of I.

I remember hearing about this back in 2003/2004... I played piano as a youngster and dabbled in the organ at church when I was in my late grammar school days. My dad held out hope that I would magically get my virtuoso gifts back and earn this scholarship. Unfortunately, I had to use my brains instead of my fingers to earn the % I graciously received.

I wonder if that's funded by former Buckeye Jack Nicklaus. Either that or only for women to help offset football for Title IX

You may be right on both counts, Tom. The thing that brought this to my attention was a tragic murder of a female OSU student (can we still say "co-ed"?) when I was living in Columbus and the newspaper made a big deal of her being at Buckeye U. on a full caddy scholarship. Of course, OSU has its own airport too. Had an incident where a commercial airliner landed there by accident, mistaking it for the larger Columbus airport with longer runways. As I recall, they couldn't take off due to the shorter runway, had to remove the wings and tow it.

The caddy scholarship (s) may not be an Ohio State U thing but, rather, a program sponsored by the Evans Scholar Foundation. Here's the Wikipedia entry which suggests that there are scholarship winners in 19 colleges/universities en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Evans_Scholars_FoundationI don't believe it is open to students matriculating at every college as all the Ohio winners were going to TOSU or Miami U. GOLF, Ill.– Twenty-nine high school caddies from the state of Ohio have been awarded the Evans Scholarship, a full, four-year housing and tuition college grant offered to golf caddies, following a final selection meeting held at Kenwood Country Club in Cincinnati on Jan. 5. Each caddie (listed below) has a unique story to tell, reflecting the scholarship’s four selection criteria: a strong caddie record; excellent academics; demonstrated financial need; and outstanding character. They will begin college in the fall of 2017, with recipients awarded to either Miami University in Oxford or Ohio State University in Columbus. The scholarship is valued at more than $100,000 over four years. “Each of these deserving Evans Scholars epitomizes what our Program has been about since its creation in 1930,” said WGA Chairman David Robinson. “Their dedication, hard work and sacrifice is humbling, and we are honored to be able to help them pursue their dreams.” The Ohio selection meeting was the seventh of more than a dozen such meetings the Evans Scholars Foundation will hold across the country through the spring. When the 2016-17 selection meeting process is completed by April, an estimated 270 caddies are expected to be awarded the Evans Scholarship. The Western Golf Association, headquartered in Golf, Illinois, has supported the Chick Evans Scholarship Program through the Evans Scholars Foundation since 1930. One of golf’s favorite charities, it is the nation’s largest scholarship program for caddies. Currently, a record 935 caddies are enrolled in 20 universities across the nation as Evans Scholars, and more than 10,400 caddies have graduated as Evans Scholars since the program was founded by famed Chicago amateur golfer Charles “Chick” Evans Jr. “Based on their excellence in the classroom and their service to their schools and communities, there is little doubt that these young men and women have earned this life-changing opportunity,” said John Kaczkowski, WGA President and CEO. “We welcome them to the Evans Scholars family.” Scholarship funds come mostly from contributions by 28,700 golfers across the country, who are members of the WGA Par Club program. Evans Scholars Alumni donate more than $11 million annually, and all proceeds from the BMW Championship, the third of four PGA TOUR Playoff events in the PGA TOUR’s FedExCup competition, are donated to the Evans Scholars Foundation.
