Aren't all softball games 7 innings? Yes - unless they end early due to the mercy rule or else go to extra innings.

Here is the description of the 8th inning of yesterday's HC victory over Alabama State.
***
Eighth inning:
Holy Cross batted first, and freshman Bella Jankowski opened up the inning by advancing to second. Burr had a sacrifice bunt to send Jankowski to third. Senior Savannah Young hit a fly ball out to right field. Sophomore Sydney Behrens hit a triple to center field to add 2 RBIs and send Jankowski and Young home. Holy Cross went into the bottom of the eighth up 4-2 and secured the victory with three straight outs.
***
Am I the only one who is confused by this summary?

International Tiebreaker for extra innings! At the start of each inning, a runner is placed on second base with the intent of accelerating opportunities to score and bringing the game to a speedier conclusion. The runner is the last batter to make an out in the previous inning. At least one full inning is played, allowing each team the same chance to score. If the score remains tied, the same process is used in each inning until a victor emerges (one team scores more runs than the other at the end of a complete inning).

As pointed out above, part of the problem is the tiebreaker rule. However whoever did the play-by-play got very confused as well. It appears that McCarthy, who made the last out the previous inning, was actually the one placed on second. Then Burr had a sacrifice, Jankowski a HBP (which they missed completely), then Behrens with a 2-run triple. The way the box score was compiled, Jankowski incorrectly was given two runs scored on the same hit!

By the way, the tiebreaker rule is never used in PL games. Mostly for use in early season tournaments and round robins, where games are scheduled within a narrow time frame.

Thanks, bison. Now that you state it, the memory of hearing about it some time ago is coming back. I can't say I am thrilled about this sort of tie break.

Although the tiebreaker is sometimes used as soon as games go to extra innings in the case of these early season tournaments, the NCAA recommends - IF it is used at all - that it not be used until the 10th inning. It is more of an issue in games with super-dominant pitchers, where games might continue for 15+ innings without some sort of rule like this. That was a much bigger issue 30 years ago before they moved the mound back 3 feet and put in a livelier ball.

Considering the horrible weather in the northeast, it's a good week to be in Florida, except for the results. The ladies lost their 5th straight this morning, this time to UT-Martin 4-zip,managing only 2 hits - now 2-8 on the season with 4 games left on the trip.

having lost 8 of 9 games in florida, we're in the bronx this weekend to play 4 games in the Fordham tournament. looks like we might be over our heads with this competition but who knows. we play umass-lowell and fordham today, and detroit-mercy and seton hall tmro.

unlikely split today - losing to umass lowell 6-0 and beating fordham 7-6 in 8 innings. the rams are always competing for a-10 championships and have already played many teams from power - high major leagues. the best win in a very long time. two more games tmro afternoon

the team got in their 4 games in cold, windy conditions at the Fordham tourney and played pretty well. another split dh and 2 more extra inning games. we beat Detroit Mercy 6-4 and lost to Seton Hall 7-4. record is typical at this time of the year, 5-13. league competition starts this weekend at Lafayette.

After getting smacked around in dh losses to Marist on thursday, we proceed to lose all three games at bucknell this weekend by a combined score of 28-3 record now stands at 7-19 (2-4 in the league with the toughest teams still ahead)
this team is an example of mandatory title ix money (because of the football numbers, we all know) being shelled out to a team that is regularly underachieving. (13-30 last season) ). we have a 'recruited' soph pitcher from california who simply can't get anyone out - things don't always work out, especially when recruiting into a losing program
Let's hope for some improvement when (if) the weather warms up

Nothing to do with HC but, for some reason, I was reading the high school softball previews in the local paper. For one school, the opening lines were something like, “Coach Joe Yablotz expects improvement from his team this year. They are coming off an 0-18 season in which they lost 12 games by at least 15 runs.”

Season concluded this weekend, losing 2 of 3 at Lehigh (showed some heart yday coming from behind to win in extras) - but a final record of 12-33, after a 13-30 season in 2017. outlook not particularly good as we lose 5 senior starters including the no.1 pitcher. And yes, we are distributing significant athletic aid across this roster. Is this the best we can do ?
