I think that there is a need for a PhD dissertation on college rankings, assessing the methodology, trying to identify whether they actually measure what they say they do, and studying to what extent they have an impact on the decision making of college administrators. I think it would be fascinating.

USNWR is really the only ranking with any traction IMHO. (Of course this is not saying its rankings are an accurate reflection of reality in any case.)

As I don’t have a WSJ subscription cab someone post which schools were ranked above us. As a guess I would assume Norte Dame, Georgetown and BC Yes, Boston College is ahead of us (USA Today last year had a very different view - had has us as #2 after Notre Dame, but WSJ has more gravitas in my view). BC would never have been ahead of us when I was at Holy Cross - knew too many that got into BC but not HC. So three schools ahead of us have great or at least decent key sports - and Villanova, Fordham and others are probably going to overtake us in the near future. I guess, as many of us here have complained, Father Brooks was wrong and took us in the wrong direction. I can't believe the school is bragging about #4 when we once were clearly #3 and probably in the running for #2 (though hard to beat large universities with far more money and better locations). I so hope Holy Cross finds a way to get us back on the right track, though I worry the damage is done.

Also hard to beat colleges with graduate programs and it appears HC will always be strictly undergraduate.

I disagree that Fordham will overtake us just because they are (perpetual losers) in the A10.

Also hard to beat colleges with graduate programs and it appears HC will always be strictly undergraduate. That is a good point. One of the schools tied with us at 84th place in this particular 20 18 WSJ poll is Denison and I believe that is undergraduate. The other school tied with us at 84th place, Drexel, is undergraduate and graduate. As I recall the last time the 20 17 WSJ poll was discussed there was a bit of a surprise (to some) that we were no longer #1 in Worcester. WPI is again ranked above HC - in 83rd place for 20 18. (20 18 WSJ List: ND (#24), GT(#32), BC (60), HC (84), Villanova (120), Loyola Marymount (128) if one picked out the top six Catholic schools in order.) NESCACS well represented (Williams 22, Amherst 23, ...) as well as our Patriot sports rivals (BU 40, Lehigh 50, Colgate 55, Bucknell 59...) Sader Fan: There are no surprises in the top 40 or so schools. I can't cut and paste as I logged in remotely to my worksite. (The only upside in recent memory to being able to log in remotely from my home .)
