HC football has a minor role in this movie, with clips depicting the games against Syracuse in ‘58 and ‘59. In the movie the Orangemen were called into a midnight practice after losing the ‘58 game in a driving rainstorm, at Syracuse, against HC, their only loss of the year. However, my research indicates that the ‘58 game was actually played in Worcester. Research also indicates that HC did win at Syracuse the previous year, ‘57, so perhaps this was one of the many artistic liberties taken in the movie. Also the HC purple, I believe, was far too pastel in color vs the royal purple we’re used to. Since all photos from that era are black and white, anyone know if this was accurate? I suspect to shoot the rainy, night game, the uniforms may have needed to be lighter to show well on camera. Kind of cool seeing HC on the big screen. Makes me want to get back to writing a screenplay about the Coconut Grove game.

I have a jersey from the Tom Boisture era. It would seem to be somewhat lighter in color than the present hue- especially the home football jerseys currently in use. . Sleeve stripe, numbers on the shoulders.
My recollection of the shirts right before those (UCLA stripe, no numbers underneath) is the same. They had that style for quite a while, maybe into the late 50s.
So if you told me the color in the late 50s was lighter too, I would not be surprised

I cant believe there was a night game. A way to find the true uniform would probably be an old program. The 1958 Purple Patcher has lots of photographs of the 1957 season, including Syracuse. crossworks.holycross.edu/cgi/viewcontent.cgi?article=1033&context=purple_patcherBased on uniform colors (B&W) in the Marquette game, HC's purple was not a dark purple, but rather a medium purple. I'd guess similar to the purple in the center, PMS 2665.

In mid 60's teams wore colors at home and white on the road...the baseball cap & numerals/lettering on jersey was Navy blue;

Navy blue reference continued into the 70s...even a lot of the bookstore stuff was navy.
First home game I saw was in 1967...HC was purple, I'm sure of. So some time before that they switched.
They sure kept shirts a long time. The 1957 ones in the yearbook lasted 10 years (or they did a lot of replacing with the same).

Even class rings often came in with blue stones that were supposed to have been purple.

A check of the database for old N.Y. Times issues, indicates that the game was played in Worcester, which means that there was no chance that it was played at night. I'd guess that the film people chose to show a night game because it meant that they wouldn't have to spend money on showing a large crowd. As for the color of the jerseys, the 1967 yearbook has a color photo of the October 1966 game against Syracuse in which the HC home jerseys are definitely purple.

Someone who was a member of the Syracuse class of '58 played their senior year game vs HC in Syracuse back in 1957. Never saw the movie so just random speculation

A Syracuse fan relives the game, which was at Syracuse in November. HC lost to PSU the following week, 10-14, and then beat BC to close out the season. syracusefan.com/threads/the-bold-brave-men-of-archbold-1957-holy-cross.113687/^^^^ This very extensive narrative mentions that Greene, the HC QB, was on the cover of the 1958 NCAA football guide. Those were the days, and even IH can't resurrect them.

Then it shows the ‘59 blowout win against HC. So they took some liberties on the site and time and pulled in some details from ‘57 for color.

I was even introduced to Dr. Eddie Anderson at an HC Alumni gathering by my Dad after the game. I remember a blustery but sunny day that was perfect for fall football. Tommy Greene was relentless. I have been a Holy Cross fan ever more!

Saw this on Twitter today, and, although not precisely on point, it brought back memories of "The Express."

Saw this on Twitter today, and, although not precisely on point, it brought back memories of "The Express." The photo of Jim Brown brought back memories of the 1955 home game I saw with Syracuse. The "orange" smacked us that year 49 - 9! ! Jim Brown had a spectacular game!

Some very impressive posts! While I am of an age when things that happened 50+ years ago remain more vivid in my memory than what I had for dinner last night, that you guys can so clearly recall a game that happened when you were about 10 years old just boggles my mind. Kudos to you all!
