. . . or a transfer big from a power conference who wants immediate time. I known it's hard for a mid major to land a true impact big, but c'mon, can't this new guy get something done? Admissions office helping out or are they being obstructionist?

Hope they are really keeping tabs on freshmen bigs who enter the portal after this semester.....fwiw, I read somewhere (can't remember where) where supposedly the 2020 crop of bigs wasn't that deep. Who knows, but someone ready to go in late Dec 2020 with 3.5 years of eligibility would be a real boost.

It may be a difficult decision to wait for an uncertain transfer when we have only two scholarships available.

I always thought that a hypothetical kid who leaves Duke after one semester in Dec 2019 to pursue his lifelong dream of playing at HC could start playing in December 2020 (after completing two semesters at HC) and he would be able to play the rest of the 2020-2021 season and then 3 more full seasons. Is that wrong?

Is that wrong? I had thought so as well. Case in point the late Neil Fingelton. He became eligible second semester during the 02-03 season. I had thought he was going to be eligible through the complete 04-05 season (although as it turned out he didn't play that last year, if I am not mistaken).

The rules are probably different now, but there was a player in the late 80s, Chris Fedina, a scholarship big, who was a semester short of graduation....and played first semester of his 5th year at HC, then left.
Remember that because I thought it was a bit odd that there was mutual interest in him playing under those conditions. Although, IIRC he contributed in a couple of early season games so it was worth it.

However I see that Fedina only played in four seasons for HC (actually 3.5 years), so there was no rules violation. He could have played second semester as well as far as the NCAA was concerned. Since he had been in school for 4.5 years by December, he may have simply chosen to graduate at that point and leave - or else, less likely, it was HC's decision.

Another point guard. Howard is from Westlake, CA, doing his post-grad year at the Pomfret School (CT).

Longish, interesting article from last fall. Howard suffered a serious injury (has a titanium rod in his right leg now) which had him playing hurt during 17-18 season and sidelined him during summer of 2018. May explain his lack of offers and decision to pg. Sounds like a great kid. www.toacorn.com/articles/dime-store-thriller/

if we are still recruiting against Stony Brook, Sacred Heart and a bunch of D2 schools, we are in serious trouble!! Hopefully Nelson can generate better recruiting!

The only thing that counts is the commitments. Many of our stronger players were under recruited. Tim Szatko, for example. Kevin Hamilton also.Torey Thomas was a spring signee.
