Interesting
Technically now giving former athletes a free ride at the school. These guys aren't getting "need" scholarships. They're on some sort of non athletic merit scholarship. Is there an NCAA provision for pity athletes who got their scholarship yanked?

Is there an NCAA provision for pity athletes who got their scholarship yanked? To my knowledge, there is no NCAA provision. In the athletes lawsuit against the NCAA, one of the remedies being sought was that matriculating student athletes would continue to receive scholarships if the athlete was no longer physically able to play. Niagara was carrying 31 on the start of the season roster, two jumped mid-season. With the cut of six, roster is now 18 without freshmen. Thirty plus on a men's ice hockey roster seems high. Don't know how many of the five players who were on scollies gad full scollies. Also, IMO, to cut a rising senior would be particularly bad form, as if the athlete transferred, he would need two years at his new school for a degree.

No different than a violin player getting a free ride from the music department. In a year, if any of the same players decided to try out again as walk-ons, they would have to relinquish this aid if they made the team -- or Niagara would have to pull a schollie from an incoming commit.
