One more college/university ranking for discussion purposes, this one from the "Wall Street Journal/Times Higher Education College Ranking." Holy Cross doesn't come out too well but, then again, some others even more poorly. Best PL school: #50 Lehigh, then #55 Colgate, #59 Bucknell, #70 Lafayette, HC comes in at #84 (tied) and American at # 198. Army and Navy not included. Ranking #1, Harvard, of course but Columbia a surprise #2, with MIT and Stanford tied at #3 and Yale at #6 (behind Duke) beats out lowly Princeton at #9. Williams and Amherst come in at # 22 and #23 respectively. BC #60. Even WPI beat out Holy Cross by one place at #83. William & Mary #100 and our newest rival, apparently, Villanova at #120. Fellow Jesuit schools, Fordham #212 and Fairfield #214. Clark is #239. Here's the methodology: www.timeshighereducation.com/wall-street-journaltimes-higher-education-college-rankings-2018-methodologyAnd the total list: www.timeshighereducation.com/rankings/united-states/2018#!/page/0/length/25/sort_by/rank/sort_order/asc/cols/stats

Actually it's Boston U, at #40 - although it is obviously apples-and-oranges to compare a behemoth such as Boston U to small liberal arts colleges such as Bucknell, Colgate, Holy Cross, etc.

Just to show how wacky and omnipresent college rankings are, here are the recently released and hitherto obscure "World University Rankings": cwur.org/2018-19/usa.phpMethodology is, in a word, interesting. University of Delaware is 288..followed by Georgetown at 289 (!) worldwide,101 and 102 in the US. Gives the Blue Hens something to crow about.

What!? When did BU join the Patriot League! What does it have in common with the other schools? Next you'll be telling me there is some stupid trophy between it and Holy Cross!
At least we can take comfort knowing that Notre Dame is the best Catholic school of higher learning and better than any Patriot League school and better than any Jesuit school as Georgetown comes in #31.
Obviously kidding and I admit I overlooked BU in the long list of colleges/universities and that's why I put the link for the entire list.

www.timeshighereducation.com/world-university-rankings/college-holy-crossTheir write up of Holy Cross is a little weird:The College of the Holy Cross is a leading liberal arts college in Worcester, Massachusetts. Established in 1843 by a group of Jesuits, it is a Roman Catholic institution which remains the sole Jesuit college in the country to exclusively run liberal arts courses for undergraduates. CHC is one of the few Catholic institutions to have ranked among the top 50 liberal arts colleges in the US. It became a coeducational college 1972, having previously admitted men only. Worcester, which had its main boom during the Industrial Revolution, is famed for its many old-fashioned diners which are prominent across the city. It is around 40 miles east of Boston – the only larger city in the whole of New England – and under 20 miles north of the state’s frontiers with Connecticut and Rhode Island. With CHC one of nine colleges in the city, the metropolis has a high student population. Religion plays a key role in the college’s day-to-day life, although attendance at mass is no longer compulsory. Similar numbers of male and females students attend CHC, including a fairly significant proportion of international students. The majority of students choose to live on campus. Economics and psychology are the subjects studied most commonly at CHC. At times, as much as 30% of the student body has majored in one or the other. Other progammes include accounting, anthropology, chemistry, classics, philosophy, Russian, sociology and Spanish. Alumni include Nobel Prize-winning surgeon Joseph Murray, US Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas and sports broadcaster Bill Simmons, who spent years working for ESPN and has recorded a range of podcasts.

Good to see they got the compulsory Mass situation cleared up, considering it ended in 1964

Rob, a few years ago there was a story that Holy Cross was one of the best colleges for the study of history. I remember sending it to Fr. K and he humorously said “of course.” At about that time my son was teaching history at HC and I wrote back that I thought he was the reason. We both chuckled,
All that said, in this day and age, I am not surprised many of the kids are taking “more practical” courses than in the past and jibes with my annual conversations with graduating seniors during “Senior-Alumni receptions.”
Ya think history is history at HC?

Ever since the days with Dr Grattan and Dr Green and Professor Shea, I have always preferred "historically correct" to "politically correct." I hope that is still the case today.
