A walk on does not count against the 13 schollie limit

I didn’t realize that, breezy. Thanks. As most of us remember, Damon Hart the elder was an excellent rebounder for his size (also only 6’5/6’6). Although he was part of PL frontcourts unable to stop Adonal Foyle during that era.

Good question. Here are some more: Are the three suspended guys still enrolled? Does anyone have any idea why they were suspended in the first place? Have any players transferred? Have any players decided to leave team? With respect to the suspensions, I would bet that virtually the entire campus is aware of the reason behind it. What I know and speculate: Hargis and Verbeek signed letters of intent. Hart, Lovisolo, and Yeutter have been added to the program's incoming class As such I speculate that Hargis and Verbeek are on scholarship and the others are not With two too many scholarships, I speculate that Charles and Stevens are off the team - and if they are, Powers is likely as well. I know that all three finished the semester and were on campus through finals. I have no clue if they will be HC students in the fall or if they have that as a paying option. Based on conversations with a few different students, virtually the entire campus might have a basic idea, but few. if any. have actual specifics of the wrongdoing Based on a tweeted photograph of all six rising sophomores doing summer workouts together, I speculate that all of them are firmly in the fold for next year. I have no reason to think anyone else is transferring or leaving the team, although there is a lot of speculation about Perkins' medical status. Useless information, but I speculate that DJ is short for Damon Jr The last year or two the updated roster was on the website in early July. We should "know" more then

About D.J. Hart F 6-5 230 Newark, N.J. / St. Benedict's Prep.
This recruit to some might be a second coming of Keith Hochstein (according to the folks I spoke to at St Benedict's in Newark). They all remembered Keith from his time at HC (when they were just kids). I hope they are correct

Fair enough...but, from what I remember and have seen at St. B's, D.J. had a better supporting cast in high school than Keith did years ago.

Maybe D.J. is an under-the-radar type who has talent but, as noted above, was blocked by some real high level players on his high school team.
I apologize if this info is available on an earlier thread, but do we have a recap of any offers/interest (D-2 maybe ?) for the three new players?

From the PL Governance section regarding Men's Basketball: 2. Squad Size. [February 2009; revised December 2013; revised, CAA, November 2017] Squad sizes shall be limited to fifteen (15) participants and a bench limit of twenty-two (22) for visiting teams during the regular-season and all teams during the Patriot League Championship. There are no squad size limitations for the home institution in regularseason competition only. [Exceptions will be made for a Clergy or Officer Representative] NCAA rules allow for 13 scholarship players. Assume this is true for the PL. Thus, it looks like there is room for only 2 preferred walkons. Last season we had 14 on the roster. Assuming that 1 of the 14 was a walkon, we must have had 13 on scholarship. Assuming we lost 2 on scholarship and 1 walkon, that would allow for 2 scholarship additions and 2 walkon additions to get to the max 15 participants allowed by the PL. With 5 incoming players, it would appear that 1 other scholarship player has left/transferred.... Comments??? There is no limit at all for preferred walk-ons or any type of walk-on, per PL or NCAA rules. The only PL limitation is that only 15 players can travel to league away games. Army has rostered as many as 24 players and Navy has had close to 20. Lehigh had more than 15 at one point.

RGS it will be a miracle if D J Hart a non scholarship player comes anywhere close to being in the same class as the great Keith Hochstein. I suspect the only thing they may have in common is their size.

Comparing a player who appears to be a non-scholarship "recruit" to one of HC's truly elite players, (Keith Hochstein had career averages of 20.2 ppg and 11.5 RPGs), is really unfair to the youngster. If he turns out to be half the player Keith was, I'd say there is reason to rejoice and put him on a full-ride.

Verbeek didn't have any reported offers, either. Hargis had an expired, year-old offer from AU, older ones from Lafayette and Colgate.

Okay let me be the dolt who has to ask for this rather than dig through the immense backlog of posts. Let me also preface my question with the statement that I hope all of these incoming, current, and future HC players be the second coming of Michael Jordan and win every game they play in for HC and beyond.
1) Are we still talking about recruits for the freshman class next year because we've absolutely, positively lost one, or several now-former HC players due to prolonged suspension and expulsion/dismissal from the team?
2) Are we talking about recruits for the freshman class next year this late in the game so to speak because they were NOT on the radar for scholarships at HC or anywhere else, were not heavily recruited by HC or anywhere else, and we're now sifting through the leftovers? Kind of like unsigned free agents after the NFL draft? The potential dismissals from point #1 above left us "short" and gave us the need to go out and find more bodies for the roster?
3) Can we confirm that none of these players is actually being offered a scholarship, and they're really recruited walk-ons, and are not at the caliber of player that one might have expected as a true scholarship offer, acceptance, and commit?
3a) Is there a feeling that any of these players are D1 players who can meaningfully contribute right off the bat, or will they all be crap shoots?
I think the lack of communication from the school, while legally/NCAA-rules permissible, has this whole situation smelling fishy for several months now. And slapping on the fanfare for walk-ons is a bit of a lipstick on a pig situation.
Again, I hope all of these players are the second coming of Kareem Abdul Jabbar and are immensely successful at HC.

Worcester here answers at least part of one of the questions that I had above. He posted while I was typing my post, so our threads crossed in cyberspace. It seems like this is picking through the FA pile after the fantasy baseball draft to fill holes in the roster. Not ideal.

KC, MP, and JS would be three scollies. With WP a walk-on, that's four of a 14 man roster. Perhaps bison can answer, as to whether a walk-on receiving only need-based aid does not count against the 13 scollie limit for men's basketball. Need-based aid does not count toward athletic scholarships...The Ivies give all "need-based aid"... With the incoming freshman posted, I'd think the roster will be updated soon...(Before the hoops camp?)

I suspect the only thing they may have in common is their size. They also have a similar style of play under the boards. (In regard to KH's game, Jack D used to say when asked how he decided to position himself under the boards, "Where does a 500 pound gorilla sleep? Answer: Anywhere he wants." I hope DJ Can develop into that sort of player. Remember, I got this information from folks at DJ's Prep school, so they are hardly unbiased. I found it interesting that they made the connection to Keith.

Perhaps bison can answer, as to whether a walk-on receiving only need-based aid does not count against the 13 scollie limit for men's basketball. A walk-on receiving need-based aid is not a counter IF he does not fall into the NCAA definition of a recruit. To be a recruit, a player: (a) cannot take an official visit; (b) cannot have any arranged off-campus meetings with any coach etc (this also applies to the player's relatives); and (c) cannot be issued a letter of intent or any written offer of athletically-related financial aid. One minor exception is that a player who was recruited but is only receiving need-based aid does not become a counter until he plays a varsity game. If he only plays JV, for example, he would not count for that year. These rules only apply to basketball and football. Coaches know these regulations, so if they are pursuing players late in the year who will only be offered need-based aid, they will avoid official visits and meetings off campus.

Thanks bison. I had wondered about the counter calculus for hoops given that need-based aid for football counts against the 63/85 limits..

I know nothing at all about Hart, but do have two questions:
1. He was not on the St. Benedict's roster prior to his senior year. Did he play somewhere else or play another sport?
2. For their 2017-18 season, NJ.com has stats for nine of their games. Hart did not play in any of those games. Injury or just DNP?

I can't ever remember 3 recruited walk-ons in the same year (if that's what they are). I'm wondering if the staff is thinking ahead to the year when the Big 6 graduates (rather than being focused on next year with these new faces). Even if they are not legit D-1 players, having extra bodies in the program to absorb the loss of 6 guys all at once in 2021 may help.
