Guessing it's a lot harder to apply and center a COLLEGE OF THE HOLY CROSS rear window car decal ( particularly inside version ) than it is for a HOLY CROSS type
Don't think I've ever seen decals that say....
PENNSYLVANIA STATE UNIVERSITY ( just PENN STATE )
UNIVERSITY OF PENNSYLVANIA ( just PENN )
COLLEGE OF WILLIAM & MARY ( just WILLIAM & MARY )
UNIVERSITY OF CONNECTICUT ( just UCONN )
UNIVERSITY OF SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA ( just USC )
UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA LOS ANGELES ( just UCLA )
Will stop there....

But 50 years ago, it was College of the Holy Cross most of the time. Remember, sports reporters and commentators always try to use the shortest form possible. We can often be lazy in that regard...how often do you see "New York Football Giants" even though that is actually their name. At one time it made sense since there were NY baseball "Giants" as well. Politics and sponsors also get involved. At one time, SMU played on tv and the announcers were not allowed to refer to them as the Mustangs (they used "ponies"and "horses" often) since the game sponsor was Chevy.

Respectfully disagree....
All my student writing paper/envelopes, the book coverings, correspondence from school ( report cards mailed home ), pencils, pens, beer mugs, glassware and my prized Holy Cross chair all said HOLY CROSS or HOLY CROSS COLLEGE.
Heck, the coffee mug on my desk ( circa late 60's ) has the classic Crusader on horseback with the banner flying HOLY CROSS in purple affixed to the lance.
I 've never owned anything that said COLLEGE OF THE HOLY CROSS on it.

You talking in the past or would like to see it now? I went to “Holy Cross College” in the mid/late 60’s.

Interesting. I went to the College of the Holy Cross from 1963-67.

They changed the name your senior year and you didn’t notice because it was deemed too affected.😂

The movie “Rudy” accelerated the change of branding with the use of College of the Holy Cross being the required brand and the use of Holy Cross College no longer being acceptable for the college located in Worcester.
At the time of Rudy’s enrollment at Holy Cross College it was a junior college to provide a two year entry for students who wanted to go to Notre Dame, but may not have had the grades to get in. The Congregation of the Holy Cross, had an articulation agreement between HCC and ND.
Once Holy Cross Junior College of Indiana, founded in 1966, became a four year institution that was then identified as Holy Cross College, then Holy Cross in Worcester realized that there would be a branding issue and a confusion of institutions. From that point it was required that we be identified as The College of the Holy Cross on all communication and signage. We should have used the Latin name of Sanctae Crucis.
Think of the Loyola Universities.... Loyola University Maryland, Loyola University Chicago, Loyola University New Orleans. The Loyola University in Los Angeles became Loyola Marymount with their merger with Marymount College. There would be enormous confusion if they did not use their geographical location in branding. The same is true of the Concordia Universities in NY, Minnesota, California, Texas, Nebraska.

Will stop there.... I've seen plenty of these stickers with the full school name, and you can find such in the bookstores at each school (including HC) - usually in the long and narrow horizontal with block lettering type.

There's a sign at MetLife Stadium for the "New York Football Giants", and they use it in their media guide:
