35-7 final from Orono. Bigger upset in the CAA is URI beating Delaware on the road 21-19

At first glance URI's (perennial CAA doormat) 21-19 victory at Delaware (picked near the top of CAA) is a huge upset.
Last year URI did come out firing on all cylinders v FBS Central Michigan opening day and lost in overtime 30-27. They did wind up beating Harvard, Albany, and Villanova...and losing to a good Elon squad 35-34. So, they didn't stink.
There is quite a dropoff from JMU (CAA preseason #1) down to Delaware/UNH (preseason 2 and 3). IMHO these won't be the only CAA losses for Delaware/UNH. I'm thinking SBU, Villanova, and Elon are even money v these two.

The musket trophy for the UNH-Maine game is outstanding. Pure New England. Like HC/Colgate that game should always be played in November.

I don't like that this rivalry game is celebrated with the winning team receiving a gun. Sends the wrong message. When with TPTB at UNH and Maine correct this? Anyone else uncomfortable by this "trophy"?

Don't look at the trophy for the Wisconsin/Minnesota game then....

With that being said Maine deserves a ton of credit. They came ready to play and have more talent then people give them credit for. Never an easy game in the CAA!

This morning's Boston Globe has the sports staff College Football picks for the weekend. No listing for HC-Colgate, but they are showing the picks for last night's UNH-Maine game. Even after the game has been played, only one writer made the correct (Maine) call.

That is troubling to me .....we have fallen off the radar in the Boston media....time to get back on it with some sustained improvement in football and hoop

Could be the locals thought it would be a pretty one-sided and uninteresting affair at UConn (v UCF) so many decided not to go/not buy a ticket. Final score 56-14 so they may have been on to something.

Something to be said for playing a "local" team like Holy Cross who despite being a small school, "travels well" because of the dedicated alumni base.
I posted years ago how the folks in Columbus were so impressed with the Holy Cross turnout and enthusiasm at the Nationwide Arena for the NCAA basketball game against Southern Illinois.

Maine doesn't play Delaware or JMU the rest of the year so there is a pretty good chance the other teams knock each other off and Maine wins the conference. This is the rest of their FCS schedule @yale vs Villanova at URI @ William and Mary vs Albany at Towson at Richmond vs Elon Can they win seven out of those eight games to get to the NCAA Tournament? I think they can.

Black Bears up 22-0 at H This might take the shine off our UNH game to an extent Maine is always one of those teams that throws the kitchen sink at you. They never seem to be extremely hyped pre-season but ALWAYS find a way to finish with an above-average record in the toughest FCS conference in the East.
