This was actually a very big deal in its day.....they had an O'Melia Award Dinner a week or two after the game was played and it was a pretty big affair.
Anyone hear if they are awarding it again this Saturday?

Correct Jack won it in the only 2 years he played in the game, 1964 (HC loss) and 1966 —winning TD pass He was hurt in 65, as a frosh in 63, all frosh were ineligible

Pretty sure it was officially awarded to the Sacramento St team who wore the HC unis during the '69 season.

That was some classy move by Sacramento State. I do wish HC could get them on the schedule again. 2019 would've been nice, but any year would be OK IMO.

Rob, pretty sure, without looking it up, that we never played Sac State and so we can't get them on the schedule "again" - it'd be a first.
You may recall that I posted on the old board that I and one of my classmate/co-workers were in Sacramento on a business trip perhaps 10 years ago. My classmate was one of the players/victims (defensive tackle) of the '69 "Missing Season." A business colleague of ours was a Sac State alum and connected with the school. After our meetings he took us to Sac State. An outstanding stadium there. We met with the AD and one of the assistant football coaches. Neither was around in 1969 as you might imagine but both were very knowledgeable about the story as it is apparently part of the lore of Sac State football. Both said they "would love" to play Holy Cross. Their preference, of course, was to play at their place but said they would also like to make a trip east but "it all comes down to money" (implying if Holy Cross wanted to pay their expenses, they would love it but of course, that is not about to happen). We made very clear that we were not representing Holy Cross in any fashion. After returning, I reported what they said to Dick Regan and Tom Gilmore. Neither seemed especially keen on the idea. So, nothing ever became of it. Somewhere I have pictures of my classmate in front of the Sac State stadium.

Interesting, looks like the Sacramento-area still has some interest in HC. They actually have a preview of tomorrow's game in their paper today: www.sacbee.com/sports/article217987885.htmlIf I remember correctly, didn't we wear a decal on our helmets or unis to honor a Sacramento St player who died during the season a few years ago?

Sacramento State and Holy Cross is a very special story. If someone wins the lottery, maybe they will volunteer to pay the travel expenses of the teams to start a rivalry every few years.

I was thinking about playing in order to reestablish contact with a school that showed remarkable empathy at a most difficult time. At least the HC uniforms played there.

Mention of Steve Strachan. His uncle is our parish priest. Father Strahan. Somewhere along the line a branch of the family dropped the "c".
