I remember when that was required reading for all frosh entering HC. I always both appreciated and respected his scholarship.

Yes, our Class assigned readings the summer before entering Holy Cross and discussions the first week were "The Other America" by Harrington and the light reading "Ulysses" by James Joyce. Reading the latter made me feel stupider than a bag of rocks and unworthy to be attending Holy Cross with the geniuses that must have understood every word of it. Fortunately, when I actually got to these little discussion groups, I found that most of my fellow classmates appreciated that Harrington's book made some sense and Joyce's mostly got the reaction of Amber Ruffin's "Say What?!":
